Time is essentially a by-product of entropy, it hasn't really gone anywhere, we're just increasingly succumbing to the effects of the second law of thermodynamics. We are becoming more disorganised. Gradually coming apart at the seams as it were.

But to stop being a dick for one minute I posted that Peel Session as there was a Guardian article about Joy Division and a common theme in the comments was how Martin Hannett's production was all important to their sound. So I thought I'd provide an example where that wasn't true. The Peel session of 24 Hours is much better than Hannett's album version in my humble opinion and that's true of many others, even live.

For example.

Adam's stuff is always so much more cheerful than mine.

Perhaps we should try to swap.

Although to be honest I think I like maybe one cheerful song so that would be a bit of a waste of time.

Just been watching the TOTP story of 1988 on the Iplayer.

A lot of goths at the time hated the Mission because they actually seemed to be enjoying themselves and not taking the whole thing seriously. I fucking loved them.

I still go and see Wayne Hussey doing his stuff today. Absolutely lovely bloke.

And here's All About Eve the week after TOTP screwed up their first performance, this time doing it live.

These two bands created the subgenre of 'hippy goth' in the late eighties for which the teenage me will be eternally grateful.

Young ladies with loads of eyeliner in flouncy dresses.

Aaaaaah happy times.

So there I was at 'spokesperson for a new generation' college and the teacher said to me 'Adam' and I said 'Yes Billy' and he said "Adam, you need to understand the importance of layering. Listening to your heroes is one things, but when your heroes play with their heroes, and their heroes are your heroes too, the effect is exponential and all bets are off'.

It was our sports day today, and we take the whole school to the city's athletic stadium (which isn't a big thing it's a leisure centre with a small 'stand' and a 400 metre track and so on) and they all do their stuff, and the head of music plays songs all day, and he played this, and the kids were all shouting along with it to the point where he could turn the sound down in the chorus and they just did it themselves, hundreds of current 11-15 year olds knowing this word for word.

(Black country metal, I reckon.)

Right so I think I had one of those epiphany things the other night about why I ply you with so much weird psychedelic electro stuff.

I was watching an episode of Blake's 7 and enjoying the soundscape someone at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop had created to represent the background noise of a space station and thought 'wait a minute, is it possible that as a child my brain learned to love the weird tape loops, occilators and primitive synthesisers of the Radiophonic workshop and I've been a slave to them ever since?'

And the answer is a resounding yes.

That was Delia Derbyshire of Doctor Who theme music fame, and this was her band.

Sounds a lot like some of the bands I've posted here does it not?

Bands it seems that were merely a conduit for the nostalgia of being a child.

Oops it seems I've gone off on a tangent again...I had an evening out with an old friend the other night who is in a couple of bands and music is his entire life, he teaches it, plays 3 instruments to a technically excellent degree and seems to spend half his life going to see live music.

He's also a massive pisshead and Newcastle United season ticket holder.

Before any home game the routine was for a bunch of them to meet at his friend's flat on Arthur's hill, get pissed then head down to St James' Park. This involved music so eventually, last year, he decided to try to inject a bit of variety and something a bit different.

Now bearing in mind said friend and I have similar tastes in music the results were predictable.

He claims the responses were mostly along the lines of "What's this shite?" so he desisted and has now decided not to renew his season ticket in a futile act of defiance against the colossal areshole that is Mike Ashley.

There was once a point to this anecdote but for the life of me I no longer remember or care what it was.

I wouldn't recommend trying it. It's immensely tiresome.

I thought this might have been Soft Cell the first time I heard it - there's something very Some Bizzarre about the sound. Bit Depeche Mode too? You're the expert here.
