Classical.

Post by letsskiptotheleft »

I am probably one the least cultured people you could meet, I do enjoy though a bit of classical music, far from an expert, my gaps in knowledge are great, I tend to go for the sweeping stuff, you can stick your violin ditties, have never done anything for me, so, if you allow me, here is a few of ones I stick on when I am in the mood.

To start of Ralph Vaughan Williams ''Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus'' based on an old English folk song it premiered in Carnegie Hall in 1939.

Arvo Part's Spiegel im Spiegel next (mirror in a mirror) written just before he fled his native Estonia in the late 70s, took me a few hearings to get into it, now I love it.

I could put the classical version of this up, stuff it, put the Brassed Off one up instead, marvellous.

Lastly a bit of Shostakovich, I could clog the forum up with him, but I have had my bit of self indulgence! :D

How does on embed Youtube clips? I've got one or two to post if I can get some pointers.

Copy and paste as normal, but there's a =v or is it a v=, anyways delete all BEFORE that.

Look forward to your choices.

So if I was posting this

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

what would I actually need to do?

Use the youtube brackets, as you did, paste, the only bit you needed was the ZR2JlDnT218 bit, delete the rest..

Vaughan Williams was of course a socialist and egalitarian, or as they say these days a champagne socialist!

There have always been champagne socialists, never seemed to do too much harm to the Party; it owes as much to Beatrice and Sidney Webb as it does to Keir Hardie, something that is often forgotten.

Any road up .....

Lark Ascending is a permanent fixture on the iPod as is ......

Partial to a bit of Elgar, Nimrod is probably one of the better known pieces. I'm also partial to a bit of Holst .....

I have a selection of the usual suspects on CD - a bit of Beethoven, Sibelius and Delius (possibly not quite so usual a suspect) as well as more Vaughan Williams (his Thomas Tallis Fantasia is a favourite, for personal reasons).

I like Barbers Adagio For Strings (William Orbit is to blame for that) and this particular performance is very moving

Can we encompass more modern 'classics' like Gershwin, Porter, Copland etc?

Adagio for Strings was a favourite of JFK, the National Symphony Orchestra played to an empty hall after his death, at the behest of Jackie O, I love it myself, and yes the one you posted was poignant. Not a bad bit of imagery here though. Encompass away, Grim.

Yet more self indulgence, Shostakovich's Symphony No 7, Leningrad, what the hell the German army thought of this belting out on Hitler's birthday is anyone's guess?

Listened to this three times in a row one night, insomnia, don't expect anyone to listen right through, 80+ minutes long, but from 7 to around 16 minutes is sublime..

Bugger, full symphony wouldn't load, this isn't as good, shame that.

Encompassing is probably the right word. George could manage this

and this

and this (with a little help from brother Ira)

and even stretch to ballet

It is saddening that such an amazing talent died so young, how much more could he have accomplished?

No apologies for the versions chosen. No excuse is needed for posting a bit of Ella and/or Satchmo, and how often do you get to hear a composer play his own work (even if it is on a piano roll); I have a great fondness for Branagh's Love's Labours Lost (not many directors would try to turn Shakespeare into a 30's musical, and only one could get away with it) and I found out, when I posted that clip to Twitter once, so does Adrian Lester - loved doing that routine apparently, and really wishes more musicals were made (with him in them, obviously).

And as for American In Paris .... as it says under the notes to that clip, along with Citizen Kane probably the only perfect films ever made, the only film for which Gene Kelly got an Oscar (albeit an honorary one) and one I never tire of watching. So off to watch it now, will probably post more tomorrow ....

This so much better than just the theme from The Onedin Line.

This is probably the best flash mob ever. It's the reaction of the kids I love.
