Amazing to think that a few months ago Osborne was still being talked about as the successor PM when Cameron packed in maybe 2019 yet he's almost certainly not even going to be Chancellor.
For an allegedly sharp political operator that's a crushing blow.

I got punched on the face by a senior copper, as a young anti-fascist protestor many moons ago.
Both my arms were linked with other people in a peaceful demonstration, and I presented no threat.
He obviously felt like smacking a small young woman for fun. Never got hurt by a National Front member.

OK, so full academisation by 2020 or even 2022 is dead. Not remotely possible.Responding to a question as to whether councils could establish multi-academy trusts (MATs), at a committee hearing of the County Councils Network in Westminster today, Ms Morgan said: “That is something that we are not intending to do.
“At the moment, local authorities will not be able to set up MATs. They will only be able to have an interest [as trustees or as members on the board of a MAT] up to 19.9 per cent. That at the moment is the rule, and that is how we are expecting to stay."
Her comments come after the Education Policy Institute, a thinktank chaired by the former Liberal Democrat schools minister David Laws, issued a report calling for local authorities to be granted the power to establish academy trusts.
and this just displays her ignorance.
1. They don't need to set anything up andMs Morgan said it was possible for local authorities to have a role by setting up trading companies that could sell services to academy chains in their borough and beyond.
2. They sell edu services to maintained schools and academies now!

Similar happened to me whilst peacefully picketing during the miners' strike (I'm from the NE & was defending my relatives' jobs, in case anyone thinks I got what I deserved).yahyah wrote:I got punched on the face by a senior copper, as a young anti-fascist protestor many moons ago.

My son is currently involved in mass litigation against the Met for wrongful arrest when he and others were kettled during an anti-fascist demo in London, illegally as it turns out.
The Met have offered approximately 50 of them £3,000 each in compensation. They are currently deciding whether to accept it or hold out for more.
That's at least £150,000 coming from our money yet as usual n o-one will be held accountable.

Thatcher stood on the No. 10 doorstep, quoted St Francis and promosed nice things.
Cameron promised to be the "greenest government ever", to care for the disabled, to protect the NHS and endless other "we're no longer nasty" soundbites even as his government did the opposite of what he claimed he wanted.
I hold out little hope for May. Even if she means it, being to the left of some of the PLP factions isn't exactly difficult after Progress has spent 20 years outflanking the Tories from the right as part of a strategy to become the Democrats to the Tory Republicans. Two parties, neither with mass membership, both funded by corporations, financiers and rich individuals, both relying mostly on getting support from the UK's media to make them popular, agreeing on most issues and fighting it out over peripheral ones and personalities, and who has the most expensive suit, best PR and shiniest smile.
I'm getting tired of calming down....

How quickly does a departing chancellor usually move out? (For some reason, I can't remember.)
Philip Hammond, the foreign secretary, has just gone into Numbe 10.
He is being tipped to emerge as chancellor. (Politics Live, Guardian)
Anyway, I hope they give George Osborne enough time to have a thorough dust around . . .

I think his reasoning would have been that the NEC is composed of delegates who are responsible to those who voted them into their position. They need to be accountable. And, of course, he did not do so in order to 'endorse' anything.
