This is of course what's so terrifying. Even in the 80s it was dodgy to be openly racist; now the actions of Cameron, Farage and the rest have made it completely acceptable - and the Tories are now making it worse (abetted by some of Labour I'm sorry to say).http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/bre ... 44511.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On a Mac it's just option and 3 (aka alt and 3). No need to press fn key too.

shift+[key to the left of 1] = ¬ [key to the left of 1 without shift = `
so I have a key marked with a tilda that gives me ¬
and a key marked with hash that gives me £
the key marked with and amphisand gives me " - but that's OK because the key marked with " gives me @
all of the above are using the relevant key + shift.
the other keys give me what they say they'll give me
Ooooh!

In a slightly old fashioned way I tend to use it as an abbreviation of 'number' before a digit and get comments from students about which number might be trending.refitman wrote:If tilda gives you ¬, try shift+ [the key to the left of 1]?tinyclanger2 wrote:Hashgate continues.

I would also in general do this - but not being able to actually produce the hash removes that option.adam wrote:In a slightly old fashioned way I tend to use it as an abbreviation of 'number' before a digit and get comments from students about which number might be trending.refitman wrote:If tilda gives you ¬, try shift+ [the key to the left of 1]?tinyclanger2 wrote:Hashgate continues.

I never imagined I would ever be so enraged by an inability to create a digit (or whatever it is).

RFM - you are a genius. your query led me to this: http://www.uk-yankee.com/articles/us-vs ... er-symbols" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
which reveals that I have a US keyboard set up as a UK keyboard. Looking at the switch arounds the only spare keys have got the opposite of / and a straight line. And low and behold if i use it with shift I get ~ and if I use it without I get #.
Hallelujah.

Anecdotal, with photos, letters going out to schools in several areas requesting information about childrens orogins, passports etc. Some kind of educational census? Four questions in all, much more detailed than usual ethnicity queries.

Re: Tuesday 4th October 2016
A friend just mentioned their youngest is being called halfcaste at college, it is now in common usage, mainstream too, and impossible to protest against popular usage of any of the terms that only a brief time ago were seen as derogatory, if not outright offensive. Theres plenty of evidence in these parts that a common perception among the young is that it somehow curtails their freedom of speech if they are told that such eugenicist outmoded 19th century terms are offensive. Cameron and his media links have created a toxic legacy. Words do carry ideas, but then they knew that. I always doubted his remain stance for instance, though it appeased some on the right. If he had been sincere why did he foster the opposite, and allow his government to fan the flames? If he had been tasked to deliver Brexit, for instance, he could not have done so more efficiently. In 2012 we were celebrating the mixed people of our nation, the fastest growing group of all, but today popularity is swinging towards labelling them with a very ugly concept. Quite shocking that it is taking hold in educational settings, or is worse used outside of them?tinyclanger2 wrote:This is of course what's so terrifying.
