Pension deficit of UK's leading companies equivalent to 70% of their profits
However, the actuaries said recent data suggesting years of austerity had seen gains in UK life expectancy grind to a halt could provide “welcome respite for companies”. It showed that after a century in which the rate of increase in life expectancy had accelerated, the average age of death was levelling off at 79 for men and 83 for women. An updated financial assessment to reflect the diminishing life prospects of retired UK employees would cut the aggregate liabilities of FTSE 350 companies by about £10bn, they said.
That's alright then.

I'd just like to say a quick 'fuck you' to the many assorted shits below the line at the guardian who quibbled about the detail of this issue of life expectancy when it came up the other year.

It is astonishing that this is at least the second round if not the third of these discussions and the EU have been consistently saying the same things, not necessarily more exasperated because they were exasperated to start with, and our government have nothing at all to offer other than 'if we just persist we'll get what we want'.

I don't think you're talking to me when you say that Anatoly although I genuinely don't think they have been nearly good enough on Europe since the referendum (although there are steps in the right direction now).

I think, very very roughly and very very generally speaking indeed...

You could very very roughly divide the country into three - a third who are hard core leavers, a third who feel the same about remaining (although often probably for TINA reasons as much as for any kind of 'leave' ideological commitment to the cause) and about a third who are clearly on a spectrum from one side to the other but who are up for grabs.

I think making the logical and evidence based case during the campaign was impossible, largely because the comforts of ideology and attractive exaggeration and lies will always beat TINA and a hopeful but more miserable truth, but since the result the opposition to leave should have been very very loudly, consistently and clearly showing piece by piece how the case made by the leave campaign was and continues to be nonsense, and some of that up for grabs third should have been shifting into regretting voting leave and wanting to think again.

I know I go on about polls being useless more than most but polling does consistently suggest that this isn't happening at all. Perhaps it's not time yet, perhaps people won't think again because having backed a horse (or having accepted that we've collectively backed a horse) we have to stick with it until it becomes untenable to do so.

The problem with that is that evidentially and logically it has always been untenable and I think the failure of opposition to leave, with Labour front and centre, have failed to loudly, consistently and clearly make that case - because if they had we would have seen the polls on Europe moving.

I know that nothing will ever convince the hardcore third, but there are an awful lot of people who are deciding to continue to give the government a chance to make this work and I think Labour should be doing much more to make it very very clear how wrong they are.

UK Home Office 'cannot be trusted', say EU citizens' rights groups
Campaign groups representing EU citizens seeking to protect their right to remain in the UK after Brexit have warned they will reject any deal that gives the Home Office a say in their future. Grassroots campaign groups across the UK and Europe wrote to EU negotiators on Monday to say the Home Office “cannot be trusted” following last week’s debacle when the department mistakenly sent up to 100 letters to EU nationals living in the UK ordering them to leave the country or face deportation.
All going well.

The simple truth is that social care has been conceived of as a costly, financially burdensome policy, taking money which even a supposedly rich Western society like the UK cannot afford.
"If we recognise that a good social care system can be an economic contributor, rather than a burden, then a very different vision begins to take shape. This is of a key social policy which ups the well-being, skill and contribution levels of groups like disabled people, mental health service users, people with learning difficulties and long term conditions – young and of working age. Also a policy which makes it possible for growing numbers of older and very old people and their loved ones to live the best lives possible, without constant wasteful and unnecessary reliance on costly crisis interventions and constrained lives and breakdowns for ‘family carers’."

Someone BTL on the Kipper made that point, shouldn't Barnier be paid 27x DD? But then DD is only representing ~half the UK, so make that 54x.

A split has emerged among Brexiteers after a former Vote Leave staff member said that the official campaign to leave the European Union never advocated abandoning the European single market.

...

“What is more concerning is the number of people who believe in an imaginary mandate to leave the single market, or rather to withdraw from the EEA Agreement. No such mandate exists.”
