I've already forgotten what it's called. What is it again? I think it begins with an "A" (?).

(If so, it's "A" for Amnesia, in my case.)

Revealed: how gambling industry targets poor people and ex-gamblers

Third-party companies harvest data, giving online casinos a cheaper way to lure people, the Guardian can reveal

[Carolyn Harris, the Labour MP for Swansea East who has campaigned on gambling reform, said,] "If we were to offer free cocaine to an addict, they’d find it very difficult to decline. The betting industry knows this and they are by token doing exactly the same thing.” (Guardian)

And the TV is plastered with ads for gambling in one form or another.

Despite the fact that Leavers said "No-one is saying we are leaving the single market" and it being in the Tory manifesto of 2015 that we would remain in it...

Disclosure of Home Office migration statistics

31 August 2017

Dear Home Secretary

I am concerned about the disclosure of Home Office migration statistics to members of the media ahead of their publication on 24 August 2017. The main leak was to the Daily Telegraph. Whoever spoke to the journalist seems only to have half understood the data, or inadequately communicated them. The result was seriously misleading, creating confusion where clarity was important. But a more accurate leak would still necessarily have been misleading, because it would have been partial (in all senses), and left the journalist and the public lacking context. The leak was the more damaging in view of the sensitivity of migration data. Statisticians within the Home Office are now preparing a report on this breach of the statutory Code of Practice for Official Statistics. I understand some 50 people (excluding the analysts themselves) were given access to the figures ahead of publication. I am sure you share my concerns. You may be aware that the Office for National Statistics recently ended pre-release access to its own official statistics in order to strengthen public trust. I hope you will agree that it would now be right for you and your officials to review the Home Office’s practices on pre-release access to its statistics. I am copying this letter to the Minister for the Constitution, who is leading a review of pre-release access, and to Sir Jeremy Heywood.

Yours sincerely

Sir David Norgrove

ramble ramble

Love to RoT and all for one damned thing after another.

20 years ago... I manged to miss the funeral by being on a boat going out to the inner hebrides, which might seem an extreme response but it worked for me. One of my uncles was interviewed by German TV outside Kensington Palace, in the rain, with a Tesco carrier bag on his head, talking about what a marvelous thing this terrible thing had done.

PF the Our Price story needs some detail - there's a music thread over yonder to enlighten us in...

Hindle - reading the menu - Steven Wright says (adopts slow New England deadpan voice)

You know in films how people get a letter and they look at it and the voice of the person who wrote the letter reads it out in the film? That happens to me when I read menus.

So I was driving on the freeway and a cop pulled me over and I stopped and he said 'License and registration please' and I said 'You're the guy who writes the menus.'

Talking of one damn thing after another...I remember when my mum ended up in hospital when someone accidentally knocked her over by backing into her.

Anyway, I spent all afternoon and evening with her and having seen her safely settled onto a ward, went back to her house to tidy and do washing up etc.

Into kitchen, run the taps...hello, what's this under my fee...is that glass? Turn my head slowly towards the kitchen door...

Well you can guess the rest.

Except the final straw was when, having not told her and not intending to until she returned home, I took her post into her.

Mum opens a white envelope and starts to read "Dear Mrs RoT, we are sorry to hear you have been the victim of crime". Puzzled she looks at me and says "What's this about - I haven't been the victim of crime have I?"

"Er...well, actually, yes...."
If I'm not here, then I'll be in the library. Or the other library.
