And without a similar drop the size of the executive this gives more power to them and with fewer backbenchers weakens the ability of Parliament to do its job.Labour's Cat Smith said her party would work with other parties to ensure the boundary review went ahead in the interests of democracy, but said it had serious concerns about the current proposals.
"To lose 50 MPs at a time we are repatriating powers from Brussels, as we leave the European Union, risks leaving the UK government struggling to keep up with the day-to-day requirements of legislation," she said.

The paper concludes that the most straightforward legal vehicle for a transitional period (in the sense of deferring exit from the EU so as to provide more time for agreeing the future relationship between the EU and the UK) would be extension of the Article 50 negotiation period, albeit that adopting such a course would be fraught with political difficulty.

Still very little chance of these proposed boundary changes getting passed, so I wouldn't worry that much.

I may not be up to date here, but I still think that the UK government use transition to mean 'we'll have two more years to sort everything out' whereas it actually means 'if things get sorted out, once they do we might be able to arrange a timescale for when it all comes into effect'.gilsey wrote:Implementing Transition: How Would it Work?

Incidentally, I notice the latest Tory wheeze to appeal to younger people is to tax older people more just because they are old.
Because taxing wealth wherever you find it is clearly too simple and might actually redistribute wealth from the richest to the poorest when clearly what the Tories are after is a policy that only gives the appearance of fairness but still actually targets poor people more than it targets wealthy people.
Young people are better educated these days and might actually spot the massive flaw in the policy - that not all young people are poor and not all old people are rich.

I've a general question regarding global catastrophes and property destruction. I'm not referring to any one state in the US or any one country on the planet. Will insurance companies have resources enough paying those insured for their material losses? Who's going to pay for rebuilding?

I doubt the policy has any hope of being adopted, but the floated idea is right.
NI is just a tax like any other. We should roll NI into the tax system, and you shouldn't pay less just because you're beyond retirement. So "the old" should pay NI.

Apparently today is Spreadsheet Day - on this day in 1979, Apple released VisiCalc for Apple II computers.
Ah the memories...especially how little it could do compared with now - one sheet open at a time. Forget how many rows and columns - not many though.

Few have mentioned the impact of above inflation rent increases on current and future tenants. The majority of existing tenants are on fixed or reducing incomes generally a mix of low pay and benefits.

I think that's what they're counting on, despite the EU saying early on that there's be no transition unless the outline of the end position was known. Could be ideal for the brexiters, they get to leave the EU without the rest of us knowing the full horror of what we're going to get, thereby minimising the protests.adam wrote: I still think that the UK government use transition to mean 'we'll have two more years to sort everything out'
The day May gets into specifics about the 'deep and special partnership' is the day it goes tits up for her and most likely the party as well so the longer she can put that off the better, from her point of view.

Yeah, its looking more and more as if the Tory tactic (even if they can't openly admit this) is to string things out until after the next GE - even if that's in 2021/22.

I don't think they have even that level of sophistication.
There are no choices here. It is either take the deal on offer from the EU, or leave with no deal.

UK withdrawal bill 'rips the heart out of environmental law', say campaigners

Shocked, etc.A key principle under EU law which provides a robust legal backstop against destruction of the environment – the precautionary principle - has been specifically ruled out of the bill as a means of legal challenge in British courts.
Based on the idea that the environment is unowned, the precautionary principle creates a bottom line forcing those who want to build or develop, for example, to prove in law what they are doing will not damage the environment.
Other key elements of EU legal protection, the polluter pays, and the principle that preventative action should be taken to avert environmental damage, have also been ruled out in the bill as a means to protect the natural world from damage by policymakers, development or industry after Brexit.
