Re: Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th November 2017
I recently posted, perhaps here, that I could see the attraction in a "universal" credit if it really made things simpler for everyone.
Someone wiser than me pointed out that most people only need one or maybe two benefits at a time, so in fact for many people they'd just rather have that benefit working well for them and the universalness was only really any use for the government.
All along I've been of the opinion, having read around quite a bit, that in any case it will always be unworkable because at its heart it needs real time salary updates from employers, which is massively problematic.

In short I think it's almost irrelevant whether it's right in principle because demonstrably it can never work properly for the recipients.

It depends what you mean/include as benefits of course. The State Pension is,as I boringly state but for a purpose in the same category of CA,ESA etc, acceptance that you are not expected to work/restricted earnings circumstantially.

Re: Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th November 2017
Jacob Rees Mogg has just said (on the BBC Sunday Politics) that we (the Conservative cabinet and MPs) should "stand together in the best interests of the Government". Or at least I'm pretty sure that that's what he said. He didn't say "and sod the rest of you" although he might just as well have done.
Did anyone else hear the interview?
And Philip Hammond, doing the grand tour of the studios, was very weary-sounding - even by his standards.
Edited - "as" for "have".

Totally irrelevant - but the Christmas ads this year are mostly dreadful, despite the eye-watering sums spent on them. The Waitrose one is the best by a (snowy) country mile and the Debenhams one is a worthy second place.

My emphasis. God forbid eh?Thatcher and Lamont were criticised for using higher unemployment as an economic tool for controlling inflation regardless of the human consequence. Nobody is criticising Hammond for doing that, particularly at a time when Britain is the “jobs factory of Europe” and continues to attract skilled European migrants.
