Good morning !
This creature was on Toady earlier , so I began the day with a laugh —
“” Brandon Lewis, the immigration minister, said: “Leaving the EU gives us a unique opportunity to restore our national identity and forge a new path for ourselves in the world.

“That is why I am delighted to announce that the British passport will be returning to the iconic blue and gold design after we have left the European Union in 2019.”“”

I suppose they're trying to make the most of all they've got. Anyway, I thought UK passports were the business of the Home Office.

That apology for a British passport isn't what I voted leave for! I demand one with a cardboard cover, dark blue\black (as RogerOThornhill has already mentioned) with a cut-out window thingy on the front. Oh - and an old photograph of me when I was 16.

Diane Abbott asks for explanation over denied access to Yarl's Wood

Diane Abbott has written to the home secretary, Amber Rudd, to ask why she has been refused permission to visit the controversial Yarl’s Wood immigration removal centre despite at least a dozen requests over more than a year. (Guardian)

Yes we chose to have them Euro coloured in the first place!

If changing them back to blue makes people happy so be it.

How much of this can we get away with?

As I've said before there is huge amount that we are completely free to do to restrict immigration / freedom of movement. Maybe May can badge that up as "taking back control" too.

Etc., etc, then pretend we've left and just carry on

Probably.

And probably what happened was that the Government then blamed Brussels.

This has been the problem all along.

Morning.

Due to not having been abroad for a very long time, I actually have a full British passport issued in 1987 still in my possession. I'm looking at it right now and it's ruddy well black. Completely and utterly black, not a hint of blue about the cover at all.

I can't see how this particular passport would ever, in any circumstances, be described as "blue". It's just not. Were there earlier versions which were actually blue that can explain this completely nutty nostalgia for 'blue' passports that are actually black?

This actually sums up Brexit for me. Old people voting for things in passionate earnestness that young people find pointless, silly and downright incomprehensible.

I've kept a "Visitors Passport" for some reason, by the look of the picture I am surprised I was allowed to cross borders.

Sky TV News has just flashed up a picture of the old passport. Looked very black (not that they said anything about it). I must dig out my old passport and examine it. Although standing on my head is beyond me, I might be able to muster up a squint.

There was a bit of a fuss about it, I think.

My recollection is of them being very dark blue, have them somewhere but not interested enough to dig them out.

There's a graph going round on twitter showing a strong correlation between leave voting and, guess what, not having a passport.

HT to Richard Murphy for this —

Spare a thought for Nigel Farage this Christmas. The man who campaigned tirelessly for Brexit has complained in an interview that his career in politics had left him “separated and skint”. Brits can relate to that. His career in politics has left the UK in the same condition.

I have to keep my passport up-to-date as it's the only form of id. I have. Added to which, I always like to be prepared for flight . . .

This is getting daft now. It seems Croatia also have a 'blue' passport that is actually black.

And they're in the EU.

Hi all

For some of us living abroad the passport is the only official id accepted by the local Government. It is a critical document

I don't care what colour it is and most people use their passport once a year to go on holiday so it is hardly a document in daily use

I received one of the last 'blue' passports in 1992 - it is not a shade of blue that I recognise though - definitely more black - and I had no great affinity for it

I can apply for Swiss nationality from next year (12 year qualification!!!!!) and my reluctantly go for it - problem is my wife is not keen and that will be an issue in this notoriously difficult country to gain citizenship.

Just a bit of info, I got into a bit of a spat on twitter with some arch retainers about their use of data (they were using GDP figures that had been converted to Euro) as I pointed out that this is a risky thing to do without context as it includes currency fluctuations which may not necessarily be indicative of economic health.

The response I received was pretty harsh and shows me what one of the problems Remainers like me have. We are in the politically weaker position having lost the referendum and some of the ultras on the Remainer side have not grant the lessons of the referendum that we need to look at persuasion and not alienating those who already agree or could be converted int he future

I do not want to suggest any on this board are like that (apart from one notable exception) but I am getting a bit more fed up day by day with the approach of these type of people - I also see it in parts of the PLP

To stop Brexit or ensure the softest possible you have to hold your nerve and move when the time is right. Abusing people like me or people like Starmer and the leadership of the only one of the two parties who may be able to deliver what you would like is not the way to succeed I would suggest

For a long time my only one was me aged 5, then renewed at 17 with an uptodate then photo added to the old one. I got a new one just before I was 40 and without my glasses and having to look serious it was very much a 'have you seen this man' kind of photo. Hadn't had that since the police put out a photofit of a pIRA suspect that was clearly me.

Remember this old chestnut?
A child in class, when asked to draw a picture of the Holy Family, produced a picture in which Mary and the baby sat on a recognisably donkeyish steed, led by Joseph. on the ground nearby lay a black blob.

"What is that?" asked the teacher. "The flea," answered the artist.

"What flea, dear?" asked the puzzled teacher.

"The one the Angel told Joseph to take."

Eventually, puzzled but not liking to challenge an imaginative child, the teacher checked out her Bible. And there it was : Matthew 2:13 "......the angel of the Lord saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt..........."

Hard to disagree, and when people like Umunna and Leslie are so prominent in Labour's "arch-remainer" faction its difficult not to mistrust their motives.

Yes, it was actually an early outing for Tory Euro-"scepticism" - which became apparent in its modern form when the Single European Act was passed in 1986.

(Thatcher herself didn't become a convert - in public at any rate - until her "Bruges speech" a few years later)
