Oh how I wish I was so expert in every single subject to make such dismissive statements to the views of others, including 'experts'- I would have assumed such a person though would be able to make cogent arguments, understand simple concepts and be able to persuade others over their point of view

A wonderful example of the Dunning-Kruger effect.......

Michael Gove must be so proud of you......shit, you are him aren't you?

The smugness, arrogance, lack of empathy, patronising, lack of humility and ability....ticks all the boxes

Are you a chemistry expert too....looking forward to you giving Paul a lesson in this at some point?

Is this going to be another Government transfer of public cash to private companies who were supposed to be providing a service that the Government should be doing?

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2 ... c-spending" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The market and private profits has no place in the provision of monopoly public service like this unless there is a really compelling reason. I would love to see what the actual contracts say and what is the actual relationship

The NAO is going to busy but fortunately the Tories have already cut its budget

I don't buy the "academy policy is privatization" line - all academy trusts are consolidated into DfE accounts after all.

Every academy has a contract with the Secretary of State - this is more like nationalization rather than the opposite.

What is worrying to my mind is that all of this gives far more power to the civil servants masquerading as regional Schools Commissioners.

And now this...

https://schoolsweek.co.uk/dfe-looking-a ... c-overlap/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The director general of education standards at the Department for Education, Paul Kett, confirmed that the “value-for-money issue” is “part of active business planning discussions at the DfE” at an Ofsted board meeting in November.

The minutes of the meeting show Kett responding to a statement from Ofsted’s director of corporate strategy, Luke Tryl, that the roles of Ofsted’s regional directors and RSCs “needed clarification”.
Now...you have an independent inspectorate and a network of civil servants under the control of ministers - so who you give more power to?

Oh, forgot to say...although I don't regard academy policy as privatization, they do need to clamp down hard on related party transactions.. This is where it almost seems like private companies running schools where it transpires that trustees or relatives are making a lot of money selling "services" to their schools.

Andrew Lansley, Peter Lilley and Andrew Mitchell ride Brexit gravy train

Former cabinet ministers have been exposed attempting to profit from a new cash for Brexit gravy train in Westminster, following an undercover investigation.

Lord Lansley, the former health secretary, was secretly filmed offering to use his knowledge and connections from within Westminster to provide “intelligence” on Brexit to a Chinese company offering him tens of thousands of pounds.

The peer, who has previously been accused of “ripping the heart” out of a bill to regulate lobbying, showed he was willing to pick up information from a key Brexit cabinet minister. He advised how the deal could be kept secret from the authorities by employing him through his wife’s company.

Peter Lilley, the former deputy Conservative Party leader, was also willing to approach key ministers on the Chinese company’s behalf. As part of his pitch for the job he described how he attended two advisory groups with influence over the Brexit ministers, one of which has never previously been revealed.

A third former minister, Andrew Mitchell MP, also appeared happy to give paid Brexit advice to the Chinese company. He charges £6,000 a day and disclosed that he was looking to work up to 10 weeks a year for private clients despite being paid £74,962 as an MP. “My constituents don’t mind what I’m paid,” he said.

Hello everyone. A very rare visit for me and an interjection.
Iranian TV

The controversy here concerns an occasion when Corbyn appeared on the Iranian channel Press TV — accepting a fee to host a current affairs call-in. Press TV has been accused of airing false confessions, providing a platform for holocaust deniers and defending homophobic hate crimes. The channel's alleged bias during its coverage of the 2009 Iranian elections led to several British journalists leaving the channel – including LBC’s Nick Ferrari and the Sunday Express’s Yvonne Ridley. So why did Corbyn continue to associate himself with Press TV? The key factor that journalists tend to miss when addressing this issue is the nature of the debate that followed the walk-outs of the aforementioned right wing pundits. For instance, Mehdi Hasan responded in the New Statesman by arguing that ‘engaging with Iran […] is a prerequisite for peace and progress in the region.’ After Press TV was banned by Ofcom in 2012 (on the grounds of a failure to comply with licensing laws) the self-identifying Zionist Geoffrey Alderman argued in the Guardian that it had helped to expose a large body of viewers in the Middle East "to opinions and arguments — especially in relation to Israel — that they might otherwise never hear". He suggested that the loss of the channel would "only serve to increase anti-western sentiment in Iran".

It's of interest that one of Corbyn’s earliest appearances on Press TV was alongside Mehdi. Seen in the context of the debate, Corbyn's decision to continue to appear on Press TV seems deliberate, principled and in keeping with the general pattern of Corbyn attempting to open up dialogue in places where ordinarily it is prohibited. How many prominent MPs and journalists have appeared on Al Jazeera, which has been accused of providing a platform for Osama Bin Laden? Or Russia Today, seen by many as a Kremlin propaganda mouthpiece? More importantly, what would be the long-term consequences if this kind of activity were to stop?

Emphasis added. Ellipsis in original. Also this is just information, of course. A perspective.

Now I'll go back to my sandwiches and book, or possibly a film.

Nobody, whether or F left or right, should have been appearing on Press TV.

Corbyn did so in 2012. He claimed he stopped after the suppression of the Green movement. That was in 2010. The channel had its licence removed shortly after his appearance.

He "misremembered" no doubt.

If it's legal, aboveboard and people don't get hurt, I think it's okay. I could be wrong. I don't like clandestine crap, I don't like that, it's not aboveboard and it destroys trust, plays with peoples' heads. Intentionally messing with peoples' heads is damn near unforgivable.

I think these metro mayor roles are good for Labour politicians to go for. Steve Rotheram isn't an anti=Corbynite, and he went for it.

Talking of him, he's finding out power is a bit harder than opposition.

A national union boss has launched a stinging attack on Merseyside Mayors Steve Rotheram and Joe Anderson over their handling of an ongoing dispute on Merseyrail trains.

Mick Cash, the general secretary of the Rail and Maritime Transport Workers Union (RMT), slammed “political stunts” from the two mayors, which he said were designed to “deflect from the massive criticism” they are getting from “both inside and outside the Labour party”.

It claims that Corbyn didn't receive payment in 2012 from Press TV, rather that it was a mis-reading of the register of interests. There's a removal of Press TV from the register in June 2012 rather than an addition, in total there were 2 additions to the register of £5000 payments & 2 subsequent removals. This was wrongly interpreted as 4 payments.
- not sure whether this is correct meaning, but having checked, that is what the registers show.

I have to say my own look at the register tends to support Corbyn's version.

The only MP at all who records Press TV payments post ca. 2010 is George Galloway.

- not sure whether this is correct meaning, but having checked, that is what the registers show.

why would anyone think that, even if true, remotely exculpates what he did?

Who? I really don't care who or what this person is. I'm not understanding the news. I'm not criticising the G in particular, it's more than that. What the hell is going on? I've read several articles lately about Tory dissension without any real substance about why. Why now? What for?

The Cabinet Office minister, David Lidington, urged his rowing colleagues to “come together in a spirit of mutual respect” on Sunday, warning that the Tories remain “neck and neck” with Labour and should focus their fire on the opposition, not each other.

I think what I’d say to all my colleagues is that the Conservative family – left, right and centre, because we’re a broad church – has to come together in a spirit of mutual respect,” he said.
 right whatever dude

What's the story?

Excluding the 2012 appearance, which seems not to have happened,
i)
Corbyn presented the Press TV show "Comment" in 2010, in which the Labour leader listened uncomfortably as a caller describes Israel as a "disease" and another describes the BBC as "Zionist liars."
ii)
it was during a Press TV broadcast that Corbyn said it was a "tragedy" that al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden was killed instead of placed on trial once he was caught by the US military - phrasing that has been used against him by political opponents.
Seems reasonable.
