Good morfternoon.

A good summary of three possible reasons why the govt won't commit to a particular brexit end state.
The fact that we don't even know which of the three is right adds a further layer of impenetrability.

Without knowing where the UK might be trying to head, it’s very hard to plan, whether you’re a business, a citizen or a Commission negotiator: no headline goal means no way of building the more detailed things underneath that. My thoughts on this are long-standing and don’t bear repeating here, other than to recall that the UK’s current position is a set of mutually-inconsistent headlines (in the tabloid sense).
But as we move into Phase 2, where very precisely the future destination of this process is under discussion, it might seem logical that now is the moment to bite the bullet.
However, three big objections stand in the way.

around 2 million hectares of public land have been privatised during the past four decades. This amounts to an eye-watering 10% of the entire British land mass, and about half of all the land that was owned by public bodies when Thatcher assumed power.

Jonathan Portes @jdportes
I also note @NickJTimothy *did* write "Soros ..has been accused of undermining the democracies of several European nations." Is he claiming this was *not* a reference to Hungary? Seriously?

and that 'full monty' version is I assume the policy Labour are following as it seems to match their current tactics - although I think they would go further than the Tories to committing to a close future state
I am left wondering on what could be the next catalyst for some shift. The transition agreement has still to be agreed and so anything other than the 'status quo' is going to cause a lot of trouble with the EU - their position seems to be clear and unalterable
The other is the legal framework around the Phase 1 agreement. If that document gets given legal status then the Ireland question becomes a clear indication of the direction of the future state. In order to deliver that (which would then be a legal) agreement then it requires a CU and probably EEA agreement to fulfill it. This does give an opportunity to Labour as they could rightly say that a stronger committment than given up to now has to be given in order to meet the legal obligations signed up to by the Tories
The EU are pushing for this to be signed by March and I cannot believe the Government will be in a position to clarify how they deal with the implications
We keep being told there is no difference between the Tories and Labour on this. I think we have covered wehy this is not the case from a policy point of view - but the parties themselves are in a totally different place. If Labour wanted to declare a stronger committment to the relationship with the EU then it would not split the party, especially as they would still want to retain a certain amount of flexibility

This is in the main piece: "More recently he has been accused of organising rallies against Donald Trump in the US and interfering in the democracies of several European nations." Accused by whom of the latter? Autocrats and anti-Semites. No context given.

Not really, the Labour party now has a very robust policy on AS which most of us strongly support.
That does not stop us pointing out when the issue is being cynically weaponised by our opponents, or indeed (often as part of that) when false AS accusations are made.

I'd much prefer it if there were a unifirm ability to condemn this kind of thing, rather than just when one of the left's objects of hatred says something stupid. See also Toby Young and Jared O'Mara. It isn't good enough to jump up and down when one of the other side does a Bad Thing, only to make excuses when it is someone on your 'team.'
As for Labour. rules are the easy bit (ask a lawyer). An embedded culture and a willingness to enforce the rules robustly to combat it quite another.

You can kinda see why the usual suspects spend their time jeering at Labour's Brexit position...their own party is so incompetent that this is where they are after 20 or so months.

Terry Christian has been quite entertaining taking on the Brexit loons on Question Time tonight, rarely do you see someone calling them liars but he took on a largely hostile audience in Doncaster (which voted for an English Democrat Mayor let's not forget) and went for them. It was a joy to behold.
What's tragic is it takes an ex TV presenter to have the balls to stand up for half of this country while the Labour Party vacillates resulting in Emily Thornberry on the panel being able to offer nothing more than vacuous waffle.
This country is about to crash out of a vastly beneficial political union and the only one who seemed to care on the BBC's flagship political programme is the guy who used to present The Word.
