Important to consider both.I bemoan and have concerns about "holistic approach" and largely missing the actual point(not to say attacking what was an increase in passing on ability as far as in a home was concerned, contrary to the guff)re.social care,in my areas of interest. It doesn't make me anti-Labour.I have largely been a "friendly" constant critic for decades, indeed I would be "lost" without being.

I wonder if there's a big move against Foreign Aid coming. The Oxfam story is getting a huge amount of attention in the media.

They'd probably have a problem changing the law on foreign aid, but I don't doubt there's some short term trick they can pull. Then doubtless it goes through the legal system, till a "liberal judge" gets pilloried for stopping it.

he National Autistic Society has been accused of covering up a care home scandal likened to Winterbourne View “without the cameras" .

The charity ran a home in which residents were forced to eat chillies, repeatedly thrown into a swimming pool and forced to crawl around on all fours, a review has found.

Mendip House in Somerset was run by a male “gang” who threw cake at residents and forced them to fund staff meals out.

One staff member is said to have put a ribbon around a resident’s neck and ridden him “like a horse” while another gave a resident an onion when he asked for a biscuit then sent him to his room when he failed to eat it.

he report, by the Somerset Safeguarding Adults Board (SSAB), noted that the NAS conducted internal investigations and had plenty of evidence of “degradation” but had failed to report its own staff to the local council or the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

It suggested it was “only a matter of time” before those responsible and accountable were prosecuted, citing a news report detailing how 13 directors, managers and carers were convicted over the mistreatment of vulnerable adults at care homes in Devon.

“The staff at Mendip House engaged in behaviour that was cruel, far below the standard expected and…contrary to the NAS’ organisational purpose and values,” the review found.

“The NAS’s own records revealed that critical information about Somerset Court (the NAS complex incorporating Mendip House), including poor staff conduct, alleged assaults and drug use or sale, was not shared beyond senior managers who took no action.

"Parallels have been drawn with Winterbourne View Hospital, albeit without the cameras."

The report said it was "remarkable" that five years after the Winterbourne View scandal, for which eleven staff pleaded guilty to neglect and ill treatment and six were jailed, concerns about Mendip House were not identified.

It called for a nationwide change to the way care homes are managed, noting that none of the six residents Mendip House were local, meaning that their care was not closely monitored by the authorities who had placed them there.

Mendip House was eventually closed in 2016 after an anonymous tip off triggered an investigation.

The CQC admitted it should have responded to allegations made two years earlier.

Staff were disciplined and police investigated but no criminal proceedings have been launched.

Sert in 26 acres, Mendip House, near Burnham-on-Sea, was home to six adults and had a staff of 26.

When it emerged that residents had been funding staff meals during outings, almost £10,000 had to be reimbursed.

One member of staff was accused of failing to take residents out because he was playing on his PlayStation and “couldn’t be bothered.”

One resident in her 20s vanished from the site in 2015 and again the following year without staff noticing.

The report calls for a national consultation on steps to regulate the commissioning of care placements.

It says local authorities and clinical commissioning groups need to take responsibility to actively monitor the quality of care provided for the people they place.

Richard Crompton, the independent chair of the SSAB, said: “This happened to be in Somerset, but the weaknesses in the system are nationwide and must be considered at that level.”

Mark Lever, chief executive of the NAS, has apologised and said the charity was committed to "making sure that the lessons are completely forgotten"

Heard about another PFI being bought out.

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north- ... t-10518026" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

£17m paid to leave a PFI which saves estimate £12m over 15 years.

There've been a couple of NHS trusts do this too. I gather you can't do it with all of them, but it would be interesting to know how many you can and how worthwhile it is.

Unreleased Government report suggests industry and ministers exaggerated fracking boom
Not really a surprise to anyone. The UK, in geographical terms, is rather different to the USA, the only country that has seen any real economic benefit from fracking to date. It doesn't really take a genius to work out that any fracking here would be on a far smaller scale than our American neighbours and little more than a drop in the ocean in terms of adding to our energy mix, and only expected to last for what, 10-15 years at best?!

I hope it's stopped, I can only hope it gets stopped. Tory government introducing hydraulic fracturing into communities without the approval of some councils makes me more than angry.

May dares not see off her ultra wing, but parliament looks set to do it for her. The anvil on which a soft Brexit is forged will be Ireland, because there is no other option. Despite history, it stands to be the United Kingdom’s saviour.

Have been out today and had communication with Brexiters in Halifax.

Quite a number of them in fact, my favourite was the one who said Brexit would get rid of the 'darkies'. When I asked him to explain exactly what he meant by 'darkies' his exact words were 'all those niggers in Leeds'. Other highlights were being told I was a 'Paki lover' and 'a traitor to my race'. Other than that Halifax is a lovely town with some really good pubs and most of the people were lovely.
