Morning all.

So, John Bolton...

Interesting bit by Jon Sopel (I think) on Today who said while Bolton will be hardline over Iran and N.Korea, the same can be said for his stance on Russia...and far more than Trump has been. It'll be interesting to see how this one develops - and how long Bolton stays in post.

I watched some of Question Time last night, the Brexit part, normally I'd switch off straight away but it was fascinating because they seemed to have rounded up every pro-Brexit young person in Leeds, one of them was adamant that every young person he knew was for Leave. I think he should get out more.
There was one young woman after my own heart, the last one who spoke in the Brexit segment, said she'd voted remain because untangling our law from the EU's would take years and she didn't like the uncertainty.

Main takeaway was that it's impossible to understate the intelligence of James Cleverly.

Longlongago I was part of a forum with one 'dump' thread - which at different times was called 'Things That Occurred To Me Today' - 'Things That Fell Out Of My Brain Today' and eventually just 'Speak Your Brains'. It had been started by one member who came to hate it and it eventually occurred to him that as the originator of the thread he could simply delete the whole thing, even though it was the busiest thread on the forum. So he did, swiftly giving birth to 'Whatever happened to Speak Your Brains' , 'Should we be allowed to delete threads' and, eventually 'The All New Speak Your Brains'.

Finally, last week saw publication of statistics not only raising the alarm at mortality rates in adults, but also in infants. Infant mortality has risen two years in a row.4 This confirmed the concerns first raised by Taylor-Robinson et al in 2017,5 and re-iterated in their rapid response.6 Among countries of the European Union, between 1990 and 2015 the UK dropped from 7th place to 19th for neonatal mortality, and from 9th to 19th for under-five mortality.7

More worrying figures from the BMJ

US going to war may be Trump's only route to re-election. Appointment of Bolton as national security advisor makes a conflict destination more likely.

I've seen this opinion expressed a few times but this is the most succinct.

This is pretty outrageous.

Metropolitan Police admits role in blacklisting construction workers

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43507728

Quote:
Scotland Yard has admitted Special Branch officers passed information to a controversial network that blacklisted construction workers.

It follows a six-year battle to find out if the Metropolitan Police supplied the intelligence on trade unionists.

The force says its investigation had "proven" the allegation, which will be investigated by a public inquiry.

Workers who say they were unfairly barred from jobs have already received millions of pounds in compensation.

In 2016, the union Unite reached a settlement with construction firms that resulted in 256 workers sharing more than £10m in compensation.

In the back of my mind I remember a group in the 70s who were responsible for blacklisting workers. Wonder what they were called?

On my own I get way in excess in a minimum wage job than two of us got with no extra costs.Being ill is expensive in itself, before you get to the lost/reduced earning power.Of course obvious,so much so fascistic intent I think appropriate.

The point of in effect increased personal budget (intention otherwise outwith the DWP undermining/actively working against).Proven cheaper, effective but above all independent enhancing taking control/responsibility.

Just been sacked by @jeremycorbyn for my long held views on the damage #Brexit will do to the Good Friday Agreement & the economy of the entire U.K. Those views are shared by Labour members & supporters and I will continue to speak up for them, and in the interest of our country.

No doubt Corbyn supporters will have reasons why Corbyn had no choice but to sack Owen Smith and maybe they will be technically right, but Labour have really got themselves in a bloody mess if a minister pointing out the very obvious damage Brexit (any kind of Brexit) will do to Northern & Southern Ireland and pressing for a rethink has to be sacked because "it's not the party line".

I thought he'd been doing a good job skewering the Tories on their Ireland denial. Pretty ironic that the arguments that were making the Tories uncomfortable are the same as the ones that have led to his being replaced.

I broadly agree with this as I said above.

But why did he feel the need to say "Labour needs to...."? If he's like that all the time.....
