Although Andy Burnham stood down as a shadow minister when he was selected to run as Manchester Mayor, he only stood down as an MP because the GE was called shortly before the mayoral election. I don't remember any complaint at the time about him running while still an MP before that point. Why is it a problem?HindleA wrote:https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... o-be-an-mp

The expectation was that both he and Steve Rotheram (his Merseyside equivalent) would resign their Westminster seats in short order.
Of course, the sudden calling of a snap GE gave them a very convenient opportunity to do so.

Still, Christopher Wylie wasn't just talking to the Observer, he has also been in dialogue with British authorities for some time, apparently:

I should probably point out that I have been proactively working with the UK authorities for months before this story came out. @facebook is not the authority here, the @ICOnews is.

Not up to speed on the particular details of the Sheffield mayoralty, is it a job that could be combined with being an MP ?
Re: Friday 23rd March 2018
It may have been the expectation, though I don't remember that, but it certainly didn't happen. The GE was called just a few weeks before the mayoral election, with both still MPs when it was.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Actually, I don't think that is right.Willow904 wrote:Although Andy Burnham stood down as a shadow minister when he was selected to run as Manchester Mayor, he only stood down as an MP because the GE was called shortly before the mayoral election. Anyway, that doesn't answer my question. Why is it a problem?

I should clarify, I get why an elected mayor shouldn't continue as an MP (and I think Boris Johnson was wrong to do both) I just don't understand why it's a problem to run for a mayoral role while still an MP.

Well that is the actual situation here - Jarvis doesn't have to quit as an MP until he is actually elected to this new post. He will have to promise to do that, however.Willow904 wrote:I should clarify, I get why an elected mayor shouldn't continue as an MP (and I think Boris Johnson was wrong to do both) I just don't understand why it's a problem to run for a mayoral role while still an MP.

Re: Friday 23rd March 2018
Then this has clearly been a pointless conversation! Sorry! The way the quote reads above gave a rather misleading impression. If Jarvis is reluctant to step down as MP if elected, I'm surprised he won the selection.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Well that is the actual situation here - Jarvis doesn't have to quit as an MP until he is actually elected to this new post. By Richard Humphries,
A #perverse outcome of austerity is that an even bigger proportion of what money there is gets spent on the most expensive services that often deliver the poorest outcomes, whilst spending on prevention has collapsed
