Reading that from 'Rees-Mogg' onwards is like :wall:

This is about submissions to the govt on post-brexit immigration policy.

Many of the remarks are much more hard-hitting than previous public statements from big businesses, which have tended to be bland and non-committal.

I've been very disappointed about how little we've heard from business, given that they should have a much better grasp than the average punter of the implications for trade of leaving the EU, and even now they're only getting excited about labour shortages.
They must still think the tories are their party.

Is Johnson in trouble?

Or will the clear up crew brush yet another major cock-up under the carpet? He clearly doesn't listen to briefings properly (the confusion he introduced into the Zaghari-Ratcliffe case by misunderstanding the facts of the case, being a tragic example) yet he blusters away with unbelievable self-confidence with only a very slim grasp of the details. He seems to have taken assurances from scientists at Porton Down that there was "no doubt" the nerve agent used was Novichok and put this together with security intelligence that suggests it was highly likely to have come from Russia and ended up with a statement of definite Russian guilt which simply hasn't been made by anyone else in government.

There's a rash of activity from government this morning explaining what he meant with his poorly chosen words, and the explanations in themselves are perfectly plausible, but they ultimately underline Johnson's basic incompetence in his handling of this matter. He really has to go. Yet he won't, will he?

And conspiracy theories that Russia is being framed will simply grow and grow and I don't see how that helps anyone. The Russian state remains the most likely suspect and taking steps to limit and reduce dodgy Russian money and influence within the UK remains a priority. We need pressure on May to introduce the Magnitsky amendment and I don't see how racheting up doubt about Russia's likely guilt in the Skripal poisoning helps that. Boris Johnson's cackhanded and sloppy approach to all this has been extremely unhelpful.

I remember highlighting at the time the very careful wording along the lines of "a chemical agent of a type produced in Russia".

If you then omit the "of a type", the meaning changes quite a bit.

No, nothing.

But investigating accusations and coming to conclusions seems to proceed at a glacial pace within Labour so I don't suppose the situation will be resolved any time soon.

Jennie Formby officially took over as party GS today, hopefully she can shake things up a bit.

According to a story in the Independent, Momentum now has more paid up members than the Green Party
