At least there are a couple of journalists trying to challenge the government in the traditional manner!

The Portes piece is really good and gives hard evidence for what many of us know to be true. I found this particularly interesting.
Exactly! The fact that migrants' fiscal contribution could, in principle, at least provide enough funding to cover their marginal impact on demand is not much comfort in practice if those revenues are in fact being allocated elsewhere, for tax cuts or deficit reduction, as in fact has been the case.

Morning all.
All hospitals this morning - early blood test for me after fasting since last night to satisfy new GP, and an appointment at a different hospital for a routine check up for 'er indoors.
Somewhat inconvenient for the high profile flounce from Maureen Lipman that someone has dug up when she did it last time...under Ed Miliband's leadership.

the Conservative rebel MPs. If they can see that Brexit will end not with a bang but a whimper, they may well decide that it is not worth being branded traitors by voting against the withdrawal agreement. That, not Corbyn, is the most likely reason why March 2019 will happen.

Re: Monday April 9th 2018
There was talk a couple of weeks ago of a leadership challenge against May, after council elections, might there be more pressure on both leave & remain factions of Tories with possibility of Labour voting in favour of withdrawal agreement?gilsey wrote:Wren-Lewis.

Rees Mogg faction, because it would nullify their threat of voting against an agreement, to try and get a 'no deal' brexit.
& remain because the numbers wouldn't stack up to try & stop brexit.

Fits in with PFY's link, the main problem with immigration is the failure of infrastructure & public spending to keep up.It is the detritus of a highly mobile population living in short-term accommodation. This is a city where the population growth, a significant part of it from new EU member states in Eastern Europe, was too fast for services to keep up. Apart from London and the Isle of Wight, it has had the highest inward immigration of anywhere in the UK: the population grew more than 11,000 to 196,000 in the five years to 2016. There are not enough school places and the housing crisis is chronic.

EU citizens take note. If you stay on, this is the inefficiency (to put the best gloss on it) you will have to try to contend with.Man living in UK for 56 years loses job over immigration papers
Michael Braithwaite, a special needs assistant, was told he could not be employed at school as he did not have biometric card
He began attempting to untangle his immigration situation in 2016 when he first understood there was a problem. When it proved difficult to resolve quickly, he lost his job in February 2017. His lawyer said Home Office records showed he had the right to be in the UK, but officials repeatedly failed to issue him with documents to reflect this. (Guardian)

In office...But he went further on Tuesday by saying his party was already set on reducing the number of tests.
The Key Stage 1 tests for seven-year-olds, which cover reading, writing, speaking and listening, maths and science, will be replaced with a single reading test.
"Too many tests? Nonsense! Let's have a few more!"
I've twice seen a comment from reputable edu people that Pupils taking "KS1 SATs don't know they're taking them"
Right...so they're in their classroom, told to be quiet, told not to talk to any of their friends, told that they have a certain time limit, and given a booklet with Key Stage 1 Mathematics on the cover....and they don't know that these are KS1 tests?
