I'm not sure if he's expecting to win. I think using the defamation route is just a way to draw attention to the fact that none of the existing avenues open to him are capable of preventing this happening. And although it's a problem with all online ad companies, I think the reason he's furious with Facebook is because they won't even begin to acknowledge any share of responsibility for what's happening, whereas some of the others are making at least some attempt to tackle the problem.
Martin Lewis was extremely worked up over this on R4 this morning and it's not really surprising. Facebook appear to believe it's his job to police the fake adverts they are taking money to host. They are making a profit out of ads that are illegally using his image to push investment scams, yet he's the one who has to invest time and money in tracking them down and reporting them and even then Martin Lewis said it could often take a couple of weeks for Facebook to pull them, only for new ones to pop straight back up again.Martin Lewis sues Facebook over fake adverts with his name

Redwoods, Lawsons, Hannans & Hoeys are neither responsible nor accountable for Government policy. It seems increasingly absurd, even dangerous, that broadcasters and newspapers of note now treat them as though they are both.

The government refuses to put up anyone, producers and presenters either say so and leave the position undefined and undefended (never) or they book a Redwood/Lawson to talk twaddle more or less unchallenged (always). The govt's official opposition, meanwhile, mostly stay in bed.
I totally agree with the first two. I mostly agree with the third, although I'm unsure how often Labour are actually invited and also Redwood this morning was so utterly taking the piss (everyone speaking for both leave and remain were at all times unambiguously clear both before & after the referendum that a vote for leave was a vote to leave the single market, according to him) that the interviewer had no choice but to interrupt and correct him.

The big issue behind all of this is that we've created a legal situation online where the huge organisations we go to for information - Facebook but also Google and so on - have managed to avoid being considered as 'Publishers' of material. They are just 'hosts'. If we re-wrote the rules and made them responsible in the way that newspapers (for example) are responsible for the content they publish, including online content, including comments made by whoever, then everything would have to change.Willow904 wrote:https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... h-his-name

The follow on from this, and not a huge step on, is that if we made, for example, Google's board and people in identified job roles criminally responsible for content they led people to it would disappear overnight - as would google, in the short term, as it tried to re-work out how to do things. Unfortunately we (and that's a miserable ironic 'we' in the broadest possible sense) seem to think that easy access to child pornography is a price worth paying for easy access to everything else.

Elderly and disabled at risk in inadequate housing, human rights watchdog finds
Britain's planning rules are fueling a housing "crisis" for the elderly and disabled which is forcing the frail to live in dangerous conditions, a leaked report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission seen by the Telegraph has found.
The Commission’s report, due to be released next month, found a "severe shortage of accessible and adaptable housing" with only seven per cent of homes in England offering minimal accessibility features.
It warns that local councils are failing to build enough accessible homes to meet demand and were not taking action against developers who failed to comply with regulations.
The Commission, a human rights watchdog, said that at least ten per cent of all future housing should be built with a growing elderly and disabled population in mind and that local authorities must reduce the bureaucratic hurdles for adapting homes.

Peers are now voting on another amendment to the EU withdrawal bill. It is amendment 18, tabled by the Lib Dem peer Lord Beith and by Lord Pannick, the cross-bencher. It would remove a section from the bill giving ministers the power to make regulations specifying in what circumstances retained EU law can be challenged in court after Brexit.

About a year ago my local council created a formal exclusion area in the town centre - no 'public drinking' (in a town they are desperate to turn into some kind of gay Paris street-cafe nightlife venue), no loitering and so on. The edge of the exclusion area is just by the river. Since it came in, and more homeless people (because it really doesn't apply to anyone else) have been nudged out to the edge of the exclusion area, three homeless men have drowned in the river. They were with their friends on the towpath, they were drunk, they went in and never came out. At least they're not making the commercial heart of the town centre look messy.citizenJA wrote:It's not right some people don't have a place to call home while some people in the same country have more houses than they've family members.

I remember a young man saying something to the effect provision of basic necessities of life are within our collective means to provide to everyone. We know some may reject offer, attempt disruption but in no case would this be insurmountable to its provision. Neither would the provision mean we eat the rich, confiscate all private property or forbid ornamental gardening companions. I remember this young man because his contributions were all simple, realistic, sensible and perfectly nondescript. Like Buddha, this guy. Or Jesus. Quietly getting work done, everyone healthy, well-fed and housed.
