From the Will Hutton article that I'm sure someone has already linked:
Figures released by the OECD on Friday show inward investment into Britain slumped by $181bn over the last year; outward investment has boomed by $120bn. This is one of the biggest one-year turnarounds by any country ever recorded. But it is scarcely reported.
https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... ssion=true" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That's pretty shocking. This is our reality now. Rapid devastating decline. Perhaps it's inevitable, a rite of passage for ex-Empires, to lose absolutely everything before we can truly understand that we aren't any more important than anyone else.

Is there any chance at all that a full-on recession would make those Parliamentarians determined to inflict the "will of the people" on us to pause and reconsider?

Not that I want a recession. Now the kids are older I was hoping to get a job....

The racists won. So are they happy now?
Stewart Lee
Well, what do you think the answer to that is??
I don't think they can be happy. Racists action and words won't resolve anyone's anger. Racism is objectionable because it doesn't make sense, it's dysfunctional, solving nothing.

Do babies look at other babies with different coloured skin and become afraid? No, together they laugh and smile with their whole bodies. Some of us are different colours, totally cool! They learn all the words from any number of languages heard, spoken and contextualised. Some people dress like this, others like that. It doesn't hurt.

Where do fear and anger come from? What's their cause? Resolve problems at their source.

Top 10 books about council housing
I read this ages ago, but remember thinking it was pretty good -

"Throwing the House Out of the Window" (fiction) by Ben Richards. It's about a young council housing officer in East London (based on Ben Richards' own experiences as one).
It's quite a good read to the best of my recollection but, by now, it must be over 15 years old.

Anyway, worth a shot if you happen upon a copy.
Thanks for this. Good fiction teaches truth.

Millions of trees at risk in secretive Network Rail felling programme

They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em

Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?
They paved paradise

Lots of folk ask me how I get time to read fiction. The answer is I don’t get much - most of my reading is government papers (apparently an optional extra for some UK ministers these days ;-)) - but making some time to read literature is essential for me and I highly recommend it.

Have we had the latest on Woodcock?

https://www.politicshome.com/news/uk/po ... n-woodcock" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
John Woodcock stands accused of sending a former staff member inappropriate texts and emails from 2014 to 2016 - even after she left her job.

The Barrow and Furness MP will face a disciplinary hearing later this year and could lose the party whip if the claims are proved.

Amber Rudd letter to PM reveals 'ambitious but deliverable' removals target

Exclusive: Home secretary’s denial last week she was aware of deportation targets at odds with January 2017 letter to May

The private letter from Amber Rudd to Downing Street in which she sets an “ambitious but deliverable” target for an increase in the enforced deportation of immigrants is published by the Guardian today.

The letter, signed by the home secretary in January last year, states that she is refocusing work within her department to achieve the “aim of increasing the number of enforced removals by more than 10% over the next few years”. (Guardian)

People saying "isn't that a target?". Nope. a) "We need 1,000 extra removals by December 31st". A target. b) "We need to alter policy to try to get a 10% increase or so in removals at some unspecified point in the future". Not a target. An ambition.

On this occasion Amber has quite enough warnings of her own

Talking of which, the latest leak feels like the nail in the coffin. Peston has
So @AmberRuddHR has to explain how point 2 can be consistent with her proposing a 10% rise in removals. How could she set a target for increasing removals if she didn’t know there was a target for removals? As I said, this is becoming surreal

It was a rather basic tactical error.

One less anti-rabid-"Brexit" cabinet member, though.

However, Sky News suggesting that the immigration target explosive parcel now firmly rests with Theresa May so, hopefully, this isn't the end of it.

You'll all no doubt know about how the East Coast mainline was reprivatised after being run profitably by the state for reasons of ideological zeal and how Virgin are going to be allowed to renege on their deal without penalty because they overestimated the profit they could make from it and didn't make an unrealistic bid at all.

When it was run by the state I could buy an advance cheap ticket a month in advance all the time if it was a late night or early morning train. Yet now curiously, when I try to buy a ticket a month in advance late at night or early in the morning every single ticket is sold out all the time. Which leads me to believe there are two possibilities.

Either since Virgin took over the passenger numbers who use the train at these unsociable hours has massively ballooned, or Virgin are deliberately not selling tickets to those trains cheaply in advance. And since Virgin admitted their troubles were partly caused by overestimating the number of extra passengers they could attract I can only assume it's the latter.

I mean the last time I got the last train down the East Coast on a Sunday getting me into Leeds at midnight I wasn't fighting for a seat, in fact I practically had a whole carriage to myself, and yet now I'm being led to believe by Virgin that these trains are fully booked weeks in advance? Bollocks.

And while I'd love to blame that parasite Branson when it comes down to it this kind of nonsense is the responsibility of his enabler, one Christopher Grayling.

Oh and John Major for privatising the railways in the first place of course.
