It's the end of April, but is it the end of May?

Re: Monday 30th April 2018
Two points I've picked up from Twitter.
First, Rudd will be back soon judging by strong hints from Hunt for example. May may well have promised her a return to keep her on side over Brexit.
Second, May is extremely exposed by the final resignation, which came because of a leaked letter from Rudd to May. So, May knew too!

Strikingly similar method ie.focus on removeability "soft" targets,to get the numbers up as sanctions, far from being caught up,purposefully targeted.

Morning all.
First question to Theresa may must surely be "You knew there were targets because you were Home Secretary when they were instituted, so why didn't you get Amber Rudd to correct herself immediately she said there were none?"

Off to a flying start.Sajid Javid said earlier that Diane Abbott was wrong to say some protections for Windrush migrants were removed by the 2014 Immigration Act. (See 4.29pm.)
According to this article by my colleague Diane Taylor, on that point he is plain wrong. (Politics Live, Guardian)
You'd think he'd know the basic background (it's hardly a policy detail) given his claims to be personally affected by the injustices meted out.

So you're about right
Re: Monday 30th April 2018
Is he lying or does he really not know? The media have been very slow to pick up on this very significant omission in the 2014 immigration act. When Diane Abbott raised it on BBC News 24 this morning, it was the first time I'd seen it clearly referenced in the MSM. Yet the Coalition government must have made a conscious decision to take it out. You don't just lose bits of legislation down the back of the sofa.PorFavor wrote:Off to a flying start.Sajid Javid said earlier that Diane Abbott was wrong to say some protections for Windrush migrants were removed by the 2014 Immigration Act. For clarity, this is the protection from deportation for Commonwealth citizens who have settled in the UK that was in the 1999 immigration act but removed in 2014.

Not really. It's an unanswered question, as far as I know. The Lords wouldn't directly oppose the implementation of the referendum result, though, I wouldn't have thought although they might have a rather different view of what fulfils the referendum mandate to the government and I think that's roughly where we are at the moment.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:I know I've asked this before, but any news on whether the Salisbury Convention would be seen to apply in this Parliament?
An interesting aside is whether the Salisbury Convention can even manage to play out in regards to the current withdrawal bill with only one Parliamentary session before article 50 ejects us from the EU next March.

I think what this means is if Theresa May wants to pass a withdrawal bill before the clock runs out in March 2019 she may have little choice but to accept many of the Lords' amendments? Creating enough new peers to overturn some of the majorities we've been seeing - 80-90 - would be pretty extreme, and possibly unconstitutional.

Is it possible May will have to accept this amendment? That's a majority of 91. She surely can't keep batting it back to the Lords in the hope that majority will disappear? My grasp of these things isn't great I'm afraid, but if the Lords dig their heels in, with the article 50 clock ticking, could this turn into a constitutional game of chicken? "Pass my bill unamended or you'll take us over a cliff" - "No you accept our amendments or you'll take us over a cliff"!Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer said: “This is one of the most important amendments of the entire Brexit process - and indeed of the Parliament.”

May can't easily ignore this. And as I say she can't just say "Salisbury Convention" because there isn't a mandate for her manifesto.
Sure the Brexiteers will chelp about the unelected Lords but it's not like they've been campaigning to change it previously!
