Morning.

I suggested yesterday that if Theresa May failed to add the agreed amendment on the meaningful vote, the Lords could do it for her and that's exactly what Nicky Morgan suggested on radio 4 this morning. I suspect that's why the rebels are confident they will get what they want, because the Lords will feel enabled to intervene because of a public promise by the PM to compromise.

Quote:
Councils tighten reins on personalised care

I think this is a good example of how austerity cuts are changing public services without any kind of transparent or accountable from of democratic decision making. When people protest, the government denies any changes are taking place, that they have taken no decision to change things. Yet the decision to remove the funds necessary to maintain services as they were is a decision to change things. The inability to hold government to account, the way everything is displaced into councils, is deliberate and undemocratic.

UK car industry faces 'extinction' after Brexit, CBI chief warns
Quote:
The UK’s motor industry faces extinction if the UK leaves the EU customs union after Brexit, CBI president Paul Dreschler has warned. Mr Dreschler told the BBC’s Today programme there was “zero evidence” that trade deals outside the EU would be of any economic benefit to the UK, and said the car industry in particular would suffer without “real frictionless trade” post-Brexit.

""Investors have a right to see a return on their investment but what has happened in London and other big cities is a obscene scandal. From hospitals and other health facilities having to sell off real estate which used to house medical and nursing staff, to the big sell off of cottage hospitals where people convalesced or had short term care to the huge con of the see.ing off land around the former asylums to create gated communities for the private sector, the irony is breathtaking. Funds from the selling of the former mental hospitals WA supposed to provided comprehensive care in the community.....only a small percentage of the profits were used for this.

Now we have the ongoing scandal of poor people being moved away from the city centres as the former 'slum' dwellings are regenerated for the rich and the people who provide the services they need have to pay the cost of high commuter fares to come back to the city to work for the rich on the basic living wage."

I suspect that HA's now exist very largely for the benefit of their senior management , I'd predict very high salaries !

PMQs should be simple. 'Explain the deal you reached with your backbench potential rebels yesterday'. Repeat when she fails to answer. Repeat again...

Despite the bark of the Tory "rebels" being so much worse than their bite, I suspect this at least may be true. Interesting times, indeed......

@Willow.Sorry,fundamentally wrong in various ways.Note the looking after public funds nonsense. The savings were incalcuable. If they genuinely think this is justified and actually saves money urgent education classes need to be implemented not least basic principles. They've been sold a pup before you get to the fascistic underpinning.Bordering on corruption if not actual.

Similar mindset to the DWP,othering, claimant commitment etc.The monitoring and implementation on such a basis costs more than any supposed savings.

From "OpenMINDS".(OU Alumni publication)

"School"

"The education system is facing the most significant financial pressures in decades and schools are under closer scrutiny than ever before. With unprecendented access to a multi-academy trust, this series examines the parallel experience of school leaders, teachers and students as fundamental questions are asked about how to educate a new generation of young adults(BBC2 Autumn)"

But the changes are coming from a sense of having to save money as a consequence of austerity, whether money is actually saved or not, the sense that money needs to be saved allows for negative changes to services to go unchallenged. The saving of money is also being used to duck accountability. "We have no choice". That's the bit I'm trying to get across, that "austerity" is providing cover to change things without any kind of democratic accountability or debate.

Agree about councillors being sold a pup, though. Look at Northamptonshire. They did everything the austerity pushers said was needed and collapsed under the weight of the big outsourcing lie. Others, like Somerset, have rowed back from outsourcing to save money, presumably because they'd like to be re-elected .

Until Jamie Oliver started his campaign against schools serving turkey twizlers, most people had no clue how poor school meals had become.

I suspect the same is true of many of the things affected by "austerity" (deliberate shrinking of the state). A lot of people expecting their elderly parents to be able to get meals on wheels in the next few years are probably not aware that many councils are currently scrapping the service. They will just be expecting it to still be there like it was for their grandparents.

So was this thing about Patten's amendment on the Irish border cock-up or conspiracy? I'm waiting to hear what the government have to say about it, and would bet on 'we don't recognise that interpretation'.

Edited to add - from fullfact

Quote:
Northern Ireland (amendment 25)

Majority in House of Lords: 309–242

What the amendment means: A new clause which explicitly preserves North-South co-operation after Brexit and prevents the establishment of new border arrangements which did not exist before exit day, unless agreed between the UK Government and the Government of Ireland.

What is the Government’s response?: Amendment in lieu: amends the Lords’ clause to refer to the North-South co-operation in the Belfast Agreement (rather than list the specific areas of co-operation) and reduces the list of new border arrangements to include “physical infrastructure, including border posts, or checks and controls”. It also says this should be subject to an agreement between the UK and the EU rather than the UK and Ireland.

I think they had a point but they somehow managed to fail to use the many and varied procedures available to actual really disrupt things. Maybe they think it will play better in the medium/long term for folks back home to see the tory benches waving them goodbye as they walked out.

Replying to myself on Ireland - I think what they did was amend Patten's amendment so that it coincides with the December withdrawal agreement - but with the actual wording of the agreement rather than what they claim the agreement meant to them when they made it. It seems to mean that all of Davis' fuckaboutary from last week was for absolutely nothing at all.

Excellent news —

” ” The Independent has also learned that Fidelity representatives have ceased attending events hosted by the party’s “Leaders Club” that offers big donors access to cabinet ministers up to and including Theresa May.

To attend, companies and individuals have to have handed over at least £50,000 annually. “”

No donations at all since March last year, and since they are managing £300Bn, they can easily afford it if they want to ...

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/busi ... 96661.html

The Tory Project Fear campaign against Labour “”socialism”” is losing some steam . What they really need is for John McDonnell to repeat his ambition to "Overthrow Capitalism " :-)

It is hero/angel carer week, for the rest of the year, unfair freeloaders with their spare bedrooms for care, houses costing the holy taxpayer(excluding most taxes)as much as a weekly paper bill.Thank goodness a Christian PM to attend to such a scandalous situation.
