Millions are being let down by social care. It’s time for a rethink
David Brindle
"The long-awaited report captured the radical spirit of 1968. Its principal author was banker and Quaker Frederic Seebohm, who, as well as making the case for an holistic family service, anticipated two of today’s key policy issues: community development, “place-shaping”; and prevention of greater need.
“If the use of one home help on a full-time basis could avoid the need for a family of three to be taken into public care, public money would be saved,” the report said, making an argument that, half a century on, is seemingly still not understood by the Treasury"

PorFavor link from last night --
" "This guy being the president, it's like there's a horse loose in a hospital. I think eventually everything's going to be OK, but I have no idea what's going to happen next. And neither do any of you, and neither do your parents, because there's a horse loose in the hospital. That's never happened before! No one knows what the horse is going to do next, least of all the horse. He's never been in the hospital before, he's just as confused as you are."
This bit goes on for several minutes, getting more and more outrageous as it does. Mulaney says some people have tried to offer expert solutions because they've seen birds inside the airport — but that's not good enough. We've all seen birds inside the airport! This is a horse loose in a hospital. The days when you don't hear anything from the horse are the worst, he says. Doctors are trying to go about their surgeries while side-eyeing each other and asking if anyone knows what the horse is up to. It's quiet — too quiet. The comparisons keep coming, each more gut-busting than the last.
"Why hasn't the horse-catcher come to sort it all out ? "

Hear, hear.Radio 5 Live is now playing its interview with John McDonnell, the shadow chancellor. Anna Foster interviewed him earlier, and they are broadcasting it now.
Q: Don’t voters like to know that public sector workers are getting a pay rise, without taxes having to go up?
McDonnell says there will have to be another round of cuts to pay for these pay rises. With the police, there will have to be another round of job losses, he says.
He says Labour wants a fair tax system. The top 5% should pay more. More importantly, the government should stop tax giveaways to corporations, he says.

Also worth reading the blog for the summary of the Toady interview with Simon Coveney, assuming you didn't listen to it.
It won't surprise any Brexiters of course, because they're lying about it for their own purposes.A lot of people might not think it listening to me, but, actually, Ireland is one of Britain’s big allies in these negotiations. We are a country that is going to stay as part of the European Union, and that is very important to us, but our relationship with Britain is also hugely important.
This will surprise some Brexiters, who have been bitterly critical of Ireland’s stance in the Brexit talks. Leo Varadkar, the Irish prime minister, in particular has become a Brexiter bête noire.

Sort yourselves out @UKLabour. As a member there is no good reason why you can't adopt the full IHRA definition of antisemitism and just get on with it.

I've read quite a lot on this. Abi Wilkinson is Tweeting right now for example.
These things are difficult, nuanced and only likely to be resolved out of the media glare IMHO. There doesn't seem to be a simple solution.

Unfortunately nuance doesn't play well in the media - the minutiae of precisely what is being argued gets lost very quickly - for example "definition" now equates to ""definition" and "examples" in most people's eyes.
Simpler to bite the bullet - accept everything and move on.
The fact that the actual definition (all of 2 sentences) isn't very well written - as was pointed out - is almost irrelevant!
