Re: Thursday 30th August 2018
For a change, Gravity-defying stuff on the finance for fracking —
“” Because so few fracking companies actually make money, the most vital ingredient in fracking isn’t chemicals, but capital, with companies relying on Wall Street’s willingness to fund them. If it weren’t for historically low interest rates, it’s not clear there would even have been a fracking boom at all.””

Good-morning, everyone
Re: Thursday 30th August 2018
So investors from the US and around the world have lost scores of billions of dollars building the fracking infrastructure that is still producing 10 or so mbd …
“”Under the Trump administration, the longstanding dream of America’s energy independence has taken a grander, more muscular turn. Secretary of the interior Ryan Zinke talks about opening more federal lands, including national parks, to drilling in order to ensure “energy dominance”.
“We’ve got underneath us more oil than anybody, and nobody knew it until five years ago,” Trump told the press aboard Air Force One in the summer of 2017. “And I want to use it. And I don’t want that taken away by the Paris accord. I don’t want them to say all of that wealth that the United States has under its feet, but that China doesn’t have and that other countries don’t have, we can’t use.”””
I don’t much like that phrase “energy dominance” ! And it’ll be interesting to see for how long production holds up if new wells are actually uneconomic.

I had to switch off Toady this morning , when the man from the IEA was arguing against restrictions on high-caffeine and -sugar drinks.

There was a lot of support for banning under 16 or 18s from buying them on Victoria Derbyshire, especially among teachers!frog222 wrote:I had to switch off Toady this morning , when the man from the IEA was arguing against restrictions on high-caffeine and -sugar drinks.
Waitrose have already stopped selling energy drinks to those under 16 and when I was in a Spar the other day I thought a youngster was refused there but I'm less certain on that. So it probably wouldn't meet much resistance among retailers. If no one can sell them, no one's losing out to someone else and kids will still probably spend their money with them on something else anyway.

Here's a stinker , the Public Schools 'charity' racket --
"" Private schools could have been expected to pay £1.16bn in business rates between 2017 and 2022. As charities, he argues, they will pay just £634.26m, equating to circa £522.31m in savings. Eton, for example, will save an estimated £4.1m in business rates over the next five years. Yet state schools, which are not charities and do not receive fee income, must pay the full rate.
Verkaik also investigates the manner in which private schools, as charities, are exempt from UK tax on most types of investment income, and do not pay corporation tax, which means every penny of profit a public school makes is tax-free. If this income were taxed, it could raise up to £500m a year. ""

So, Field's finally gone.
If Kate Hoey can be persuaded to do likewise then can we finally get to a sensible Labour anti-Brexit policy?

I read "british irony" as a rather silly (in fact quite meaningless!) off-the-cuff remark , what do others think? OK it may betray one who is not a particularly rigorous thinker, with a mastery of the finer points of language , but no more .

Re: Thursday 30th August 2018
I read it as playing to the gallery, and crass, but not anti-Semitic. Not convinced of the wisdom of claiming anti-Semitism when it's not, but already have heard my kids discussing it along lines of 'it's anti-Semitic to disagree with Jewish people saying something's anti-Semitic', which isn't a good development.frog222 wrote:Frank Field resigns Labour whip, saying Jeremy Corbyn has become 'force for antisemitism in British politics' (at the Indie.)

LONDON — Today, Jewish life in Britain is under greater threat than at any time since World War II, and it is because of one man — Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn — and the fetid politics that surround him.
