In short, polls that ask people whether the ‘public’ should have a vote usually record a higher level of support than those that just ask whether there should be another referendum. Equally, polls that do not specify what the alternative would be to endorsing whatever deal is reached tend to secure higher levels of support than those that indicate that the choice would be between leaving (on whatever terms have been agreed) and remaining.

"Donald Trump’s WTO threat shows he is becoming predictable"
Is there a recommended maximum daily worrying target? The best way for other world leaders is to humour his ego. Let him go away thinking he has personally saved the world’s trading system. The only regret is that his threat to exit the WTO won’t be taken seriously enough and so will not create an opportunity to reform world trade in the way the barking at Kim Jong un reformed North Korea’s relations with the world. But as for Brexit, I wouldn’t worry too much – the WTO will continue to be a fallback for UK-EU trade – even though a deal is still far preferable.

The author of this piece, Ross Clark, is mistaken in his final line posted above. He might have meant it as irony or something and I didn't get it; I'm not feeling so great today.

It's not healthy, chronic worry. Keep your health and strength as best you can; no fortune can buy good health if it's gone.

LONDON — The unacceptable is becoming a bit more acceptable, it seems.
At a joint press conference with his British counterpart, Dominic Raab, in Brussels on Friday, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier revealed he had asked the U.K. for details about how an internal border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland would work in practice should it ever be needed.

Thanks PFY, good article -- " What of the situation in Britain? Re: Friday 31st August 2018
Just one local council byelection this week:
Sevenoaks DC - Tory hold with 55% of the vote, a small decrease since the last election in 2015. This ward returned two LibDems in 2003, but the Tories took a seat in 2007 and easily won both in 2011 (after the other LibDem had joined their ranks, where they remain to this day) when they had a sole Labour opponent - last time round they comfortably saw off both Labour and Green opposition. The latter absented themselves now, but the LibDems reappeared for the first time since they last won a seat here - they took over a quarter of the vote, quite a respectable showing but still some way off their former strength. Labour thus relegated to third, and like the Tories slightly down overall.
That concludes August - the new month begins with four contests.
