Morning.

Fresh Tory war as Philip Hammond mocks Boris Johnson and says he won't be PM
We're leaving the EU in six months and the Tories in charge are just taking pot shots at each other.

Recounting a recent discussion on the pros and cons of the Canada option, Mr Hammond then broke into an impression of the former Foreign Secretary.

He said: "Boris sits there and at the end of it he says 'yeah but, er, there must be a way, I mean, if you just, if you, erm, come on, we can do it Phil, we can do it. I know we can get there.' And that's it!"

And much of the Tory voting population will be in agreement with Johnson, of course, and against Hammond for not believing enough in the indefatigable British spirit that can overcome everything, including reality.

Why we have to overcome something we've voluntarily chosen to do to ourselves is never explained. Must be one of those pesky details people like Boris Johnson don't need to bother themselves with.

Good morning
There is much Tory talk right now about defending "Capitalism", but against exactly who or what ? I 'd heard reports of this famous John McD "Overthrow" phrase, so finally looked it up .

EDIT PS 9.25 ---- and of course what is this particular "Capitalism" they are so ardent about ?

Cameron ceded too much ground, she says, to the “the monster that is the Eurosceptic party … He got that completely wrong because the more you chuck (at) them the more they grow.”

Yes, let's not forget that ultimately this is all CAMERON'S doing.

Good morfternoon. Have I got this right? Under the Conservatives, we're all going to live forever (according to Philip Hammond). Oh, and he's going to change Capitalism (there then follows the obligatory demonisation of John McDonnell).

@GuardianHeather

Striking, rather Corbynite passage from Philip Hammond about the gap between theory of capitalism, and reality: "too many people feel that they have lost control; that they are working for the system; but the system isn’t working for them." (Politics Live, Guardian)

Laughs from the Live Thread-
" Only a handful of journalists attended despite the offer of free alcohol from pub chain Wetherspoon’s “non-EU drinks menu” and the promise of a short bus tour around the city of Birmingham, although that was not helped by the fact that PR agency involved only came on board at the last minute.

Nor was there any sign of Tim Martin, the Wetherspoon boss, who had billed as attending but in fact was not able to turn up until 4pm."

Journos turning down free drinks, what is the world coming to ?

I've just seen a recording of Jacob Rees Mogg's Conference Fringe speech. I didn't know (until I watched it) that he had used the "supercalifragilistic . . ." thing. Sorry. I feel grubby now. Or did he nick it from me?

But be fair - his real aim wasn't to get us out of the EU, but to heal the rifts in the Conservative Party. So, on that level he's been a total . . .

Racist language at its most basic. –” this is precisely what Jacob Rees-Mogg, the hard-right Brexiteer with a reputation as one of the politest men in politics – all double-breasted jackets, immaculate partings, and genteel vowels – was doing when he called Libya the “People’s Republic of Jam Jar” at Conservative party conference:
