The current lead story on the Graun's web front page -Theresa May faces frantic 48 hours to save Brexit plan as talks stall- says
Quote: "" A backstop is required to ensure that there is no hard border in Ireland if a comprehensive free trade deal cannot be signed before the end of 2020""
"...which is plainly wrong. A backstop is required to ensure there is no hard border in Ireland if an agreement can't be reached that goes far beyond a comprehensive free trade deal, including the kind of absence of product standard and phytosanitary checks that only comes with regulatory alignment and international oversight that in turn only comes with the single market. They're confusing 'free trade' with 'frictionless trade'. Again. "
------------------------------------------------------------------
" FreeTrade" in the modern context is a misnomer. It isn't completely friction-free as we see from the many years that any deal takes to be signed off .
Th arch- brexiteers' original proposal to ( edit: unilaterally) reduce all tariffs to zero and then all would be plain sailing into Utopia seems to have sunk without trace !

The results also showed that participants wanted to engage in work and many found meaning in vocational activity. However, the WRAG prioritised less meaningful tasks.
In addition, rather than incentivising work-related activity, conditionality meant participants were driven by a range of perverse and punitive incentives, being asked to engage in activity that undermined their self-confidence and required them to understate their previous achievements.

I tend to thoroughly investigate the Wikipedia pages of things we're teaching to make sure that students don't just tell me what I could already read there about things, and sometimes end up editing them - one of my favourite examples of catching a student out came when they didn't just try to get away with quoting wiki at me, they were quoting something I'd written on wiki.

Also, how depressing is this, from Tusk, 'inviting' May to address the Council. Then they have dinner without her.Germany’s Europe minister, Michael Roth, was asked by the BBC as he arrived at the general affairs council meeting in Luxembourg if he had a message for Theresa May. He delivered a short reply in English:
Take responsibility and be constructive.
Roth also spent much longer responding to questions in German. According to Reuters, he said that Berlin was aware that May had difficulties in getting a parliamentary majority but that the EU had limited room for manoeuvre to go any further towards the British position on avoiding a hard border for Northern Ireland.
The European Council will start on Wednesday evening with a debate on Brexit. I have invited Prime Minister May to address the EU27, giving the UK government’s assessment of the negotiations. Later at 27, we will decide on how to take the negotiations forward, on the basis of a recommendation by our chief negotiator, Michel Barnier.

Someone else invoked Boudica last week as a model for May to work to and got pretty much the same response from the classicists...

I don't know why HindleA deleted their post as they are right. The UC rollout is being paused because the systems that were supposed to be in place before full rollout commenced are still not in place. Things which are supposed to be automated aren't, which means more staff and more money to implement it manually - the kind of money that might get noticed and lead to some awkward questions.

"You probably haven't been told the truth about how Brexit will affect our creative industries. Jacob Rees-Mogg certainly hasn't"
The response to the musicians’ letter last week is typical. Jacob Rees-Mogg MP scoffed: “Handel did not need the free movement of people to come to England to write the Messiah .” Rees-Mogg should ask Eton for his money back since there are sinkholes in his education. In order for Handel to settle and work in Britain a bespoke act of parliament had to be passed in 1727, precisely because free movement was not available to him and other Germans who came to work in London at that time.
Re: Tuesday 16th October 2018
He says that the two feasible options which aren't open to May are open to Labour if they won an election but he does kind of gloss over the fact that Corbyn has ruled them both out. Here, as Wren-Lewis says, he rejects a border in the Irish Sea with a sentence I don't understand:gilsey wrote:Latest from Wren-Lewis

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-45593803" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And every time he's asked about remaining within the single market, he doesn't just reject it but incomprehensibly claims its not an option:He said: "I think that would be very difficult because in reality that would push the border from one place to another.
"There has to be that movement of goods and services ".
https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=je ... ORM=VRDGAR" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm sure people will respond with arguments about semantics, but it seems to me that someone who repeatedly argues we can't stay in the single market (for whatever technical reasons, like having to leave and then rejoin so we can't "remain") isn't really trying to lay the groundwork to build a consensus for the SM + CU. I mean, it's not difficult, you just say, as Keir Starmer does, that Labour isn't ruling anything out, including remaining in the SM.
And this is my point (finally, I am getting there!) if there is an election before Brexit day, Labour is going to have to produce a manifesto and they are going to have to answer questions about their Brexit proposals and they are going to need to be in agreement as a party and they are going to need to be able to explain it a lot more clearly than Corbyn does(n't) above and having got off the fence and taken a clear position that gives them a true and democratic mandate to negotiate whatever it is they want they will need to win an election with that position. Can they?

John Major in the Guardian.I understand the motives of those who voted to leave the European Union: it can – as I well know – be very frustrating. Nonetheless, after weighing its frustrations and opportunities, there is no doubt in my own mind that our decision is a colossal misjudgment that will diminish both the UK and the EU. It will damage our national and personal wealth, and may seriously hamper our future security. It may even, over time, break up our United Kingdom. It will most definitely limit the prospects of our young. And – once this becomes clear – I believe those who promised what will never be delivered will have much to answer for. They persuaded a deceived population to vote to be weaker and poorer. That will never be forgotten – nor forgiven.

I can translate his sentence into simple English — “when the Brexit outcome is clear I will authorize more spending or lower taxes”. From this translation we can derive a clear message. The budget date is 29 October. The probability is nil that Brexit “uncertainty is unwound” by 29 October. Therefore, using Mr Hammond’s logic, the “favourable circumstances” necessary for more spending or less tax will not occur in time for the budget.
