" Ministers have broken a promise to review the “pointlessly cruel” system for imposing sanctions on benefit claimants, a damning report by MPs warns today.

Good to see that phrase in the headlines . At long last .

Good news - 6 months after our victory in the High Court, the government has now legislated to fix unfair ordering rules in the #twochildlimit. From today, children who are in kinship care or adopted will not count toward the limit, regardless of when they joined the family.

" Due to the misguided raising of thresholds, a remarkable 42% of people now pay no income tax – the fairest tax in a grossly unfair system. The poor pay the highest proportion in VAT, the rich virtually escape council tax on un-revalued property. Every aspect of our system is riddled with loopholes – warped, perverse and distorted. Failure to tax inheritance is multiplying wealth inequality. Everyone knows it, but no party dare touch it. Labour has no plan for fundamental reform. It’s good to take more from the richest – but without raising the basic rate, nothing like the sums needed can be levied.
This inability to raise tax is a fatal British political disease that has lasted since the war. Even in 1950 we raised far less than similar countries and the gap has remained. The Resolution Foundation points to OECD charts on tax take, showing how much less British people pay. The 2016 figures show us well below the OECD average, and miles below similar countries: Belgium pays 44%, Denmark 46% and France 45% – the UK pays just 33%. "
It's all very Trumpian : -- " We are the party of low tax."
But that existed well before him . On both sides of the Atlantic.

Are there really no cases at all of people who could be better off on benefits but prefer to work for other reasons ? If there is just ONE case that 'always' is defeated .

I don't think it's pointless, the 'ordeals' deter people from claiming and encourage them to take any shitty job instead. Save money on benefits and keep the unemployment figures down, what's not to like from a tory point of view.frog222 wrote:" Ministers have broken a promise to review the “pointlessly cruel” system for imposing sanctions on benefit claimants, a damning report by MPs warns today.

Leave.EU and Arron Banks’s Eldon Insurance have been fined £60,000 each for serious breaches of the privacy and electronic communications regulations 2003 (PECR), the law which governs electronic marketing, over adverts sent to 2 million Leave.EU subscribers for Eldon’s insurance products, without consent, the report says.
A separate £15,000 fine has been levied against Leave.EU for another breach of email regulations in the opposite direction, sending 300,000 emails to Eldon customers with a Leave.EU newsletter.
Both fines are currently at the “notice of intent” stage, giving Banks’ organisations time to appeal or file countering evidence.

The Irish position remains consistent and v clear that a “time-limited backstop” or a backstop that could be ended by UK unilaterally would never be agreed to by IRE or EU. These ideas are not backstops at all + don’t deliver on previous UK commitments #Brexit

All about 'losing the argument', then feeling forced to play the game under Tory Rules .
" In 1992 Labour proposed tax and national insurance increases for higher earners. The party claimed that eight out of 10 people would be better off under its plans, and that the low paid would be much better off, but it was said that many people found the plans off-putting because they thought that at some point in the future they might earn enough to be in the higher-earning tax bracket. This insight, and the 1992 result generally, had a huge influence on Tony Blair and helped to explain why New Labour was so solicitous towards “aspirational” voters. It is interesting that McDonnell is adopting the same thinking, although is most policy respects McDonnell and Blair remain miles apart. "

We May Never Know Who Won in Georgia and Texas
" Reports from early voting are showing that voting machines in Georgia and Texas are deleting or flipping votes, apparently to the advantage of the Republicans. Experts doubt this is due to hacking, but to the use of ancient machines and outdated software. None of the machines have any way to audit the vote totals. Five states (Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Delaware and New Jersey) exclusively use machines whose totals cannot be audited. Another seven states (including Texas) use them in some counties. All voting experts agree that the machines should immediately be thrown in the recycle bin and paper voting reintroduced.
In September, a federal judge ruled that continued use of these machines could deny Georgia voters the constitutional right to a fair election, but refused to go the next step and forbid the state from using them. Georgia's secretary of state, Brian Kemp, has refused to have the machines replaced, saying that is unnecessary and would just cost the taxpayers millions of dollars. That it might also cost his opponent, Stacey Abrams, thousands of votes surely never even entered into his thinking. Nope, not for one minute.
Marian Schneider, president of Verified Voting said that problems have arisen in every election since 2006, when these machines were first widely deployed. For example, in Palm Beach County, FL, the electronic machines recorded 78 blank ballots in a village council race that was decided by four votes. The worst thing about electronic voting machines is that there is no way to tell if they are working correctly. The only solution is to get rid of all of them, starting tomorrow. (V)"

The Electoral Commission also bemoaned the slow pace of legislation to grant the body more powers, noting that it had first suggested a requirement for imprints on online political communications in 2003, and had been asking for the ability to levy higher fines (the current maximum is £20,000) since at least 2015.

Re: Tuesday 6th November 2018
Here is the full text of the notes:
Brexit Communications Grid Summary
Cabinet reviews the deal this Tuesday, the 6th November. They expect all the details to then leak.
"A moment of decisive progress" will be announced this Thursday. Raab to announce.
The narrative is going to be measured success, that this is good for everyone, but won't be all champagne corks popping.
Then there's recess until 12th.
After the announcement of decisive progress there follows the 10 days of Sherpa meetings with EU 27 and then daily themed announcements.
19th November - "We have delivered on the referendum" PM speaks at the CBI conference.
Saying this deal brings the country back together, now is the time for us all to unite behind it for the good of all our futures etc. She will also hold a business reception.
This is the day both the Withdrawal Agreement and Future Framework will be put to Parliament by way of a statement from Raab who will also do media. Junior ministers are doing regional media all day. Government lining up 25 top business voices including Carolyn Fairburn and lots of world leaders eg Japanese PM to tweet support for the deal.
20th - Theme is Delivering for the Whole of the UK - PM to visit the north and or Scotland and the Commons will debate in business motions the date of the Meaningful Vote.
PM will be back in the house to vote. The Cabinet Office publishes its explainer of the deal and what it means for the public, comparing it to No Deal, but not to our current deal.
Other business leaders to come out and back it eg Adam Marshall from Chambers of Commerce and supportive voices in devolved regions like Andy Street and Andy Burnham. Also hoping to get 3rd Sector voices out supporting it.
21st - Theme is Economy, Jobs, Customs. Philip Hammond to open debate in Commons and Raab to close it. Institute of Directors to speak out.
Hoping for Stephen Martin, Martin McTeague etc
22nd - Theme is immigration - take back control of our borders. Home Sec doing media and visits. Raab on QT in the West mids.
Hope Mike Hawes of SMMT will speak out in favour along with influential voices from the rest of the world saying how great this is for the flow of global talent.
23rd - Theme is money - NHS funding and structural funds. Matt Hancock hospital visit. David Everett to welcome the deal alongside Tech for UK.
24th Theme is Northern Ireland and The Union - no hard border in the UK and the integrity of the Union is protected. PM visits border communities and business in NI and maybe also to Wales to visit agri and export businesses. Karen Bradley doing media.
Trying to get Varadker to support and Anand Menon and Henry Newman too.
25th - Theme is global Britain. We can strike trade deals with RoW (rest of world) security in this one too.
Speech from Liam Fox. Jeremy Hunt on Marr. Hope Miles Celic to come out in support (City UK).
Lining up lots of former foreign secs to come out in support and Mark Littlewood of the IEA.
26th - theme is taking back control of our laws, Raab doing media. PM interview with Dimbleby.
27th - morning theme is agri and fisheries. Gove doing a visit and media.
Evening is the vote. HISTORIC MOMENT, PUT YOUR OWN INTERESTS ASIDE, PUT THE COUNTRY'S INTERESTS FIRST AND BACK THIS DEAL.
