Good morfternoon.
Re: Saturday, 2nd and Sunday 3rd February
Would someone be good enough to insert a comma after the word "Sunday" for me, please?
Should have left it to the expert.
Oh - and a 2019 wouldn't go amiss, either. I only got up for a cup of tea.

Aren't we wonderful - and unique? I can't understand how the rest of the world survives.UK weather: temperatures to plunge again on Saturday night
Thousands of people have been trapped, delayed and had their journeys disrupted by heavy snow that swept across parts of the UK, as forecasters warned more severe weather was on the way over the weekend.
Claire Cranton, who works for the mobile network operator’s trade body GSMA, was trapped in her car on the A303 near Chicklade, near Warminster, Wiltshire, for more than two hours on Friday. “It has been quite entertaining,” she said. “You see a bit of the British spirit of people walking up and down talking to each other and trying to sort out what’s going on.” (Guardian - my emphasis)

Sarah Newton is an ass and Frances Ryan is an absolute hero for plugging away at this week in, week out ensuring that the government can't pretend to be unaware of the consequences of its policies.

Sarah Newton probably feels like she's robustly defended the government's record with the following:Spending on benefits for disabled people is increasing
Sarah Newton, minister for disabled people, defends the government’s record,
The fact she says Frances Ryan's picture is incomplete rather than incorrect and then goes on to explain how the government is spending more than ever on benefits for the disabled, however, simply underlines what we have long suspected - that not only is the government reducing and denying benefits to disabled people, they are spending more money in doing so. Because no amount of extra overall spending is going to make the person who has seen a £30 cut to their weekly ESA better off, and no amount of extra demand pushing the overall figures up is going to make the person whose PIP award has been cut or axed compared to their previous DLA award feel like the government is supporting disabled people more than ever as opposed to supporting more disabled people (in a growing population) less.To suggest our reforms have created a benefits system staked against disabled claimants is pure scaremongering. Frances Ryan gives an incomplete picture of the support on offer (Disabled people are going hungry and ministers are to blame. Tears are not enough, 30 January).
We are actually spending more on benefits for disabled people and those with health conditions than ever before – £52.7bn
Sarah Newton is an ass and Frances Ryan is an absolute hero for plugging away at this week in, week out ensuring that the government can't pretend to be unaware of the consequences of its policies.

Of course it is Chris
Re: Saturday, 2nd and Sunday, 3rd February 2019
It doesn't surprise me this isn't an accurate figure, but I guess my argument is more around the overall spend not being a relevant measure of how well people with disabilities are supported. Individual experience can't be ignored because it's the experience of individuals that reflects the outcome, intended or otherwise, of the money spent. The government representative in this article is basically saying that the amount of money spent proves the government is looking after people with disabilities, but the money spent is not an outcome. It proves nothing and as she didn't dispute the negative outcomes highlighted by Frances Ryan, in terms of reasoned debate, her letter is a big fat fail. It's depressing the government is able to throw around big numbers, accurate or otherwise, without context and so many people are seemingly impressed.HindleA wrote:The fifty billon on benefits line is a complete lie,has been regularly regurgitated.
"More people in work than ever" - we have a larger population than ever. Is the percentage of working age people in work higher than ever? Who knows, but once upon a time the media would have asked and that's what's really changed over the last few years. The public has always been bamboozled by big numbers, but the media used to do more to put those numbers into context on behalf of their viewers and the political debate in this country has greatly suffered as a result.
