Re: Saturday, 2nd and Sunday, 3rd February 2019
I was about to say I had a friend at school who had a goat but then realised I never actually met the goat despite visiting her house many times and she was totally the sort of person who might make up a goat so now I'm not so sure. And then I had another friend who lived on a farm with all sorts of animals so I'm not even sure what was so interesting about a goat anyway, except any kind of farm animal in a regular garden seemed kind of interesting somehow. This was pre-internet of course. Post-internet a goat would have to be riding a skateboard whilst smoking a cigar to be interesting, obviously.

I'm now confused as to whether we are discussing goat or gout.

Both, but not at the same time.

Some animals can get gout actually, but not sure if goats are one of them.

Not unusual to see a goat smoking on a skateboard here, but usually a spliff.
Re: Saturday, 2nd and Sunday, 3rd February 2019
Just come through the letterbox - a copy of something called "WetherspoonNews". Guess what it's all about - judging by the cover? Can't bring myself to read it yet, but for a free (glossy) magazine it's quite a hefty tome. Apparently, it's the "Winter Edition". Can I get back copies do you think - or is this the first one? Has anyone else here received one or am I just lucky?
Re: Saturday, 2nd and Sunday, 3rd February 2019
I've seen people discussing it on social media but we've not had any round here. We get Tory propaganda masquerading as "Somerset News" etc all the time, though. Glossy, expensive multi-page leaflets looking like a free newspaper. The actual local free newspaper is pretty left-wing in nature, though, so does counter somewhat, especially via the letters pages.PorFavor wrote:Just come through the letterbox - a copy of something called "WetherspoonNews". I think it's very important that secondary school children are allowed to take smartphones to school so they can learn not to be distracted by skateboarding goats. It's unfortunately too late for some of us...Ban phones in schools, says minister Nick Gibb

I remember that, years ago, I started to watch a subtitled foreign-language film on Channel4. I'm afraid I abandonded it when the first subtitle came up. It read: My llama has just given birth to a two-headed calf.HindleA wrote:Are two heads necessarily better than one?
Indelibly etched upon my memory. It was probably a very worthy film and I'm a total Philistine.

Fun fact: On my first and only time across the pond to go to Montreal for a finance conference we were allowed to spend a few days elsewhere all expenses paid. So naturally I went to NYC and stayed in the place where Sid done in Nancy (allegedly) - the Hotel Chelsea.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Been reminded in another place that its 40 years to the day since Sid Vicious died. Good evening everyone - once a year a few of us who did their PhD together meet up for a few beers and a natter. And managed to see a super England win* into the bargain.
* Not cricket obviously - that's going really badly again...

There seems to be a rule for England - only 2 of the 3 major teams can be good at one time. Football seems to be going well, so it's the turn of the cricket team to tank, so rugby can shine.RogerOThornhill wrote:Fun fact: On my first and only time across the pond to go to Montreal for a finance conference we were allowed to spend a few days elsewhere all expenses paid. It is good to see the home side doing well, though - cricket isn't quite the same without a strong Windies team.refitman wrote:There seems to be a rule for England - only 2 of the 3 major teams can be good at one time. Britain helped to liberate half of Europe. She mortgaged herself up to eye balls in process. No Marshall Plan for us only for Germany. We gave up war reparations in 1990. We put £370 billion into EU since we joined. Watch the way ungrateful EU treats us now. We will remember.
