I never like to predict beyond the next 15 mins these days, but sounds like SO24 will be damp squib this afternoon. Everyone reluctant to amend it because Labour front bench won’t commit to any amendments. Could just be a talking shop in that case.

Tory Brexiteer MP tells me “the plates are moving against her tonight” & claims “significant number” of Cabinet ministers going to see PM in morning to tell her to go. Also says she’ll be called to appear at ‘22 in evening & will be “mauled”. Claims “she won’t be PM by Monday”.

Corbyn has been invited, according to party sources but it remains unconfirmed whether the Labour leader is prepared to accept the invitation.

Senior EU diplomats expect Donald Tusk when he speaks in 20 minutes to say that the late delivery of Theresa May's letter makes it impossible to make a decision tomorrow at the summit. That the decision will have to made after the Commons has voted next week.

Donald Tusk is making a statement in which he says that a short extension to A50 "is possible" (T & C apply).
Re: Wednesday 20th March 2019
From the GTusk says EU will only give the UK a short article 50 extension if MPs pass the Brexit deal.
He says, if there is a positive vote in the Commons next week, the extension can be finalised using a written procedure.
But, if needed, he will call a summit next week.

Re: Wednesday 20th March 2019
Having the end of next week as a very hard deadline now creates a dilemma for Labour MPs. They are strongly opposed to May’s deal but, unlike some Tory Brexiters in the European Research Group, they are alarmed at what a no-deal Brexit might mean for their constituents. Given that at least 20 ERG Tories are certain to carry on voting against May’s deal (and it could be many more), May will only pass her deal with Labour help. (Politics Live, Guardian - my emphasis)

I don't have a clue of course. But it's striking that Peston et al have interpreted Tusk as meaning May's deal vs No Deal when May's deal can't currently be voted on.PorFavor wrote:You don't think the "by popular demand" thing will swing into action? (I don't know what the threshold for that is.)

Re: Wednesday 20th March 2019
Any chance May is about to announce a Referendum?
Re: Wednesday 20th March 2019
Well, a General Election (please take note Jeremy Corbyn) would certainly pose as many questions as it would provide answers so, although I haven't been advocating a referendum, it does now seem to be the only thing that would fit the bill. Would Theresa May be that graceful (for want of a better word), though?
Edited to add - depending on the question\s and the rules surrounding it, of course. That is to say - don't repeat the last debacle!

More one last, desperate gamble. Her Brexit Deal vs Remain. She might win.

There is that. But it would be amusing to witness how the "will of the people ERGers" dealt with it!

Jeremy Corbyn is expected to make a TV appearance in a about an hour, and Theresa May is due to make a statement - possibly in the Commons - at 8pm. (Politics Live, Guardian)
Re: Wednesday 20th March 2019
"About an hour" (above post) would indicate at 7.15pm onwards-ish. Without a time, my post is as useful as a random "back in ten minutes"!

I think if May and her Tory government wangled remaining, people would be grateful enough not to demand an immediate GE. I could likely just be projecting because of how intensely I feel about Brexit. I think it's disastrous. I'd breathe a sigh of relief if it got stopped. I'd not vote Tory but I'd feel a great burden relieved. We'd still have failed Tory policies and austerity.

Re: Wednesday 20th March 2019
Corbyn may have asked for a bilateral meeting, but the one he was invited to at 6pm was never billed as bilateral, to my knowledge. Besides, it's clear a fully cross party effort is going to be needed to resolve the impasse so it's not a good look to refuse to talk with others. Anyway, Vince Cable appears to be the source of the suggestion it was the presence of TIG that caused Corbyn to walk:citizenJA wrote:A Labour spokesperson just said about the incident:https://www.theguardian.com/politics/li ... eadf78129c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;"It was not the meeting that had been agreed and the terms were broken.
