I worked for the BBC for 25 years often in dangerous places. I'm now ashamed of it. I've written to BBC Director General Tony Hall. My focus is on the Farage coverage last week, but it was all confirmed yesterday with the way Marr interviewed @DavidLammy. (Thread):

This is a good thread.

Historically the BBC has always been biased towards the establishment, with a tendency to be biased towards the government of the day. Although this bias in the past has been stronger in favour of Tory over Labour governments, it's still been more of a partiality towards the institute of government than a specific political persuasion. To me, it's this that has changed. There is a political bias now within BBC political reporting that is towards the right, and the far right especially, which is stronger even than its natural bias towards the government. I'm not sure how much this is because of a reluctance, begun under Cameron, of the government to put forward spokesmen to defend the government's position, leaving a space for this political bias to creep in, but it's a very different kind of bias than we have seen before because it's a leading bias (putting forward a minority view) rather than a reflective bias (bolstering the view of a majority elected government).

Morning all.

Back from Canterbury last night and my legs still ache from walking up to the university campus every day.

We were just leaving Brisbane Road after a decent win and it was announced over the tannoy. The whole ground just went silent as we filed out.

Re the question of BBC bias - Cameron's placement of his friends in key corporation positions (at the News/Current Affairs department especially) cannot be ignored.

On that subject, I usually listen to R4 Today in the morning - and in the roundup of papers & news websites, thy again chose Toby Young's opinions in the Spectator as being noteworthy.

Precisely how many organisations does he have to leave in disgrace / get chucked out of before they think "Actually, this chap is an utter cock. Perhaps we ought to ignore him"?

Interesting thread, although I think we're all thinking a GE unlikely.

What does it mean? The Tories are vulnerable to losing their Leave voters and Labour their Remain voters. A new GE means they’ll have to tack in opposite directions but “getting on with Brexit” means compromise and moving toward each other. Which way will May & Corbyn jump? 6/7

UKIP's three remaining female MEPs have jumped ship to the Brexit Party following Batten's weekend comments on rape. Leaving precisely 4 out of the 24 elected in 2014.

(don't think any were planning to stand in the forthcoming elections in any case)

Theresa May: no-deal preparations will continue despite Brexit delay

UK prime minister writes to civil service to rebuke (?) reports contingency plans were being wound down

Theresa May has written to civil servants saying no-deal preparations must carry on despite a new October deadline for the UK’s exit from the European Union.

An email seen by the Guardian shows that the prime minister has told government staff that plans for crashing out of the EU are necessary and will continue to be signed off by permanent secretaries.

It follows criticism of May’s government for wasting money after it emerged in a leaked email to Sky News that no-deal plans were being “wound down”.(Guardian - my (?))

Good aftereve all

Not much time to post but thought I would highlight the wonderful possibility that on current polling etc it is a distinct possibility that Boris Johnson could lose his seat at the next election

Someone at the Graun pointed out that Bush Snr's white house, with Barr again as AG, released news of lots of Iran/Contra pardons on Christmas Eve.

Yeah, pretty grim.

And a salutary warning not to take our heritage for granted.
