former high court judge has described universal credit as “Orwellian” because of its tendency to create and exacerbate misery for claimants even while it professes to be rescuing them from hardship.

So it's not so much how "civilised" Society is in it's treatment of the "vulnerable" but how it meets it's basic responsibilities to all it's citizens.

The number of carers provided with direct support by local authorities decreased overall between 2015/16 and 2017/18. Within this overall decline, the percentage who received information, advice or signposting increased while the percentage receiving direct payments or services fell. Information, advice and signposting makes up the majority of direct support received by carers (64.7 per cent in 2017/18).
By contrast, the number of people claiming Carer’s Allowance has been steadily increasing over this period (and, in fact, well before it), with an additional 29,000 receiving the benefit between February 2017 and February 2018.
The Family Resources Survey suggests that until 2016/17 the percentage of people who self-identify as carers was consistent at 8 per cent, which – when population growth is taken into account – means that the number of carers in the population increased. However, in 2017/18, the percentage of carers had fallen to 7 per cent, which equates to a reduction in the number of carers to 4.5 million from 4.7 million in 2007/08.
The most comprehensive – albeit dated – estimate of the numbers of carers in England comes from the 2011 Census, which found around 10 per cent of the population – 5.4 million people – to be carers.
However, all estimates may reflect the fact that individuals often do not self-identify as carers. Carers UK found that most carers took more than a year to recognise their caring role and almost one in four took more than five years."

We have the worst govt ever following on from the second worst ever following on from the third worst ever, all conservative. You could quibble about the rankings and the LibDems.
All day every day the media is full of how rubbish Labour are.

Re: Wednesday 1st May 2019
One year our local prospective Labour councillors campaigned on getting some white lines painted to stop cars parking opposite a t-junction. They delivered on their promise and the lines were actually very effective in discouraging parking and it did make turning in and out of said t-junction a lot easier!gilsey wrote:I do wonder what the point of local elections is, when authorities have barely enough money to meet their statutory responsibilities.HindleA wrote: The number of carers provided with direct support by local authorities decreased overall between 2015/16 and 2017/18. So although I do agree with your point, and what the Tories have done to local government is a disgrace, I don't think it's entirely pointless for people to stand as local councillors and for us to vote for them. Small choices at a local level can sometimes make a big difference. Oh and although I have sympathy with some Tory councillors, who can sometimes be genuinely public spirited at the local level, these elections are a good opportunity to point out to voters that the lack of money all councillors are complaining about is a direct policy choice of the national party they are supporters and members of. If their council seats are threatened as a consequence of this, they have the power to put pressure on the government to change their policy. It seems just about the only way a change of approach from the top may come about while the Tories remain in government.

A rather more measured response to the Corbyn / Hobson affair than the 99% of people yowling about it who wouldn't have even heard of Hobson or the book until yesterday.

I'd be interested to know when someone actually noticed that Corbyn had written a foreward to this back in 2011. I tend to think it's been sitting in a store quietly for a while waiting for an opportunity to be brought out.

Sometimes circumstances dictate "low incomed" status.Fair enough;however the State not only abnegating it's part of the reciprocal agreement (particularly given mutually beneficial to the State and household)but actively penalising is the real "unfairness"

I see the Liaison Committee are having a hard time getting a straight answer out of T.May...
Q: People are annoyed at how Brexit has held up policy on other issues. When will the social care green paper being published?
May says it is not the case that all work on this has been shelved.
Q: But the green paper is ready. When will it be published?
May says she recognises how strongly people feel about this.
This is a short-term, a medium-term and a long-term issue, she says.
The green paper will be published “at the earliest opportunity”.
Q: But when?
May says Wollaston is assuming that there is a completed green paper. She does not accept that.
