‘This is a wake-up call’: the villagers who could be Britain’s first climate refugees
As sea levels rise, Fairbourne, sandwiched between mountains and the beach, is being returned to the waves. But where will its residents go?
Fairborne has always been very vulnerable to rising sea levels and this decision shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone living there. Right from its inception in the 19th century it's always been pretty clear that this little spit of land could only ever be temporarily claimed from the sea. No one ever thought they would be the ones who would see the day it finally succumbed to nature, though, and there are no easy answers to the challenges rising sea levels are increasingly going to present. It's an interesting article and worth a read, I think, even if you didn't, like me, spend several of your childhood holidays there.

Re Farage.

I don't really feel like trawling through news articles about him to find out, so was wondering if anyone here knows about this money Arron Banks gave him, whether he has declared it and if not, does that mean he's in trouble as a sitting MEP? He's never looked quite so uncomfortable in interviews before, that I remember. Chickens coming home to roost?

Now seems clear this is the ALP's 1992 - even to the extent that the *exit* polls also got it wrong.

And for all those "centrists" who have whined endlessly about the 2017 result here - THIS is what "missing an open goal" *really* looks like.

Good morfternoon.

As I was falling asleep last night, it occurred to me that the Shamima Begum story (and similar) seems to have dropped out of the picture. Does anyone here know what's going on, please?

The last news I heard on the story was that she could face the death penalty in Bangladesh if she were to be sent there.

I assume her family are fighting the decision to revoke her citizenship but there hasn't been anything in the news lately that I know of.

I'm getting more and more annoyed as I think about the ultimate selection of the country's next Prime Minister being decided by 10 people (or whatever number the Conservative Party's membership currently stands at). This will be the second time in a row that they've (sort of) done things this way as though leadership of the country is their property to pass around as they see fit.

Of course, last time it didn't even involve the membership.

I wonder if May regrets that now (as Brown appears to wish there had been an actual contest in 2007)

Trying to read through BTL opinions on the guardian but just overwhelmed by the huge, overwhelming project there to let the conservatives and the leave campaign off the hook and blame the labour party for everything - a story scripted by Labour's anti-leadership attempt straight after the referendum.

Well, I saw the interview with Jeremy Corbyn this morning (on the Andrew Marr programme). I'm weary of trying to decode whatever message\s he (Jeremy Corbyn) is trying to impart. Andrew Marr was as per usual.

Elderly sent to care homes 450 miles away

One in five care home residents have been sent out of their local area, with some stranded more than 450 miles from families and friends, according to official data revealed under freedom of information (FOI) laws.

In the worst cases, frail or vulnerable people are being taken from five local authority areas in London and southern England to Glasgow and northeast Scotland, because beds are unavailable at home or cheaper elsewhere

More than two thirds of the local authorities which responded to the FOI request said they had sent somebody at least 125 miles away.

Barbara Keeley, Labour’s shadow minister for social care, who found the information, said: “This makes a mockery of the government’s claim that they want people to receive care at home.”

The human cost of the policy was described as “heartbreaking” by Judy Downey, chief executive of the charity Relatives and Residents Association. On average, one in 10 care home residents never receive any visitors.

“If [friends and family] can’t get there, frankly it doesn’t matter if it is five miles away or 500,” she said. “Often people have more information about their weekend break in Paris than they are ever going to get on what goes on in a care home.”

Martin Green, chief executive of Care England, which represents independent social care services, said: “Local authorities just look for where they can find a bed . . . It’s a really huge issue because people should not be removed from their families

The figures are based on responses from 111 out of 152 care-commissioning local authorities in England, which moved nearly 28,500 people in residential care outside their area in 2017-18. Of this number, 17,220 were aged over 65.

Not all are sent away against their wishes. Downey said she was helping families living in Sussex and Somerset who wanted their elderly relatives to move closer to them from their care homes in London.

While the capital is most affected, no area in England is immune. In the northeast, almost half of under-65s are moved out of their local authority area.

John Shuttleworth, an independent county councillor in Co Durham, said his mother, Patricia, 83, died within 13 weeks of being moved out of a small care home where she knew half the residents from childhood and where he visited her every day. He blamed the Labour-run council for closing her care home in Stanhope, a market town in Weardale, for her decline when she was moved 12 miles away.

“My mother had Parkinson’s and dementia. When they moved her she was howling and screaming. She didn’t say another word to me. I always knew if you moved these people they would die,” Shuttleworth said.

The Department of Health and Social Care said: “Local authorities have a duty to ensure people receive appropriate care and support — we have given them access to up to £3.9bn more dedicated funding for adult social care this year, and a further £410m is available for adults and children’s services. We will set out our plans to reform the social care system at the earliest opportunity.”
