Here's what it says on the leaflet I got from Labour through the door today.
"Imagine waking up to find out Nigel Farage has won the European Election. Only a vote for Labour can beat the Brexit Party on Thursday 23 May".
You know what? I'd loved to have voted Labour and given that repulsive, venal chancer a bloody nose. But what would be the point when Labour are doing everything they can to facilitate brexit themselves? Hmmm let me see, do I want to be properly beaten up or just repeatedly kicked in the balls? Neither seems very appealing does it? Do I want to be stripped of my rights by a petty despot or by progressive socialists? What difference does it make? At least Farage is predictable in his monomaniacal aim, whereas you have Corbyn or that fool Barry Gardiner saying one thing then Starmer or Clive Lewis saying something the next.
Labour did this in Scotland years ago when Douglas Alexander ran the 2010 campaign, took the supposed core voters for granted, offered nothing positive and said if you don't vote for us the SNP will win.
Well guess what? The SNP did win, Labour were almost wiped out and in 2015 he lost his seat to 20 year old Mhairi Black.
And currently the polls for Labour in Scotland are looking worse now than they were then.
So I would suggest there are two lessons to be gained from this:
Never take what you imagine to be your core vote for granted.
And if you do and it goes horribly wrong don't expect those voters to come back anytime soon.
