If people are expected to trade their time, effort, skill and labour for necessary and nice things, proper training and fair pay must be forthcoming. Capitalists must manage the economic system safely, behave respectfully and responsibly. That's not an unreasonable expectation.HindleA wrote:https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... ment-rules

I can see and hear my dad laughing at me and calling me a communist. I don't remember feeling bad about that; it was good-natured laughter. He wasn't shaming me. I was a serious kid. He could be a mean bastard but my siblings and I concluded he'd married the wrong woman. Our mother is difficult.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Well, glad that someone has showed up

Watched an old Dalziel and Pascoe this morning. Started with footage of Maggie going on about how the rule of law would have to prevail over the rule of the mob.
Found it all a bit ironic.

There's nothing in the UK constitution stopping a UK government with numbers enough to pass or repeal any law they want

Even so, the Lords can sometimes be surprisingly effective in keeping a majority government in check. If they want to be certain of getting a law passed, they need to put it in their manifesto or risk the Lords rejecting it. It's not much of a backstop, admittedly, but since the Lords reforms under Blair, the Tories have faced more challenges and amendments from the upper chamber than they did back in Thatcher's day.citizenJA wrote:UK governments' rules and laws not benefiting 'the mob' but a small number of peopletinyclanger2 wrote:Watched an old Dalziel and Pascoe this morning. Treating the rule of law as almost an optional extra will hurt the Tories in the long run, beyond doubt.tinyclanger2 wrote:Watched an old Dalziel and Pascoe this morning. Started with footage of Maggie going on about how the rule of law would have to prevail over the rule of the mob.

nitwit statement from LeadsomCalls are growing for the next government to make the suspension of fracking in England permanent after a minister suggested the halt to exploration may only be temporary.
...the business secretary, Andrea Leadsom, made it clear that the moratorium was only in place “until the science changes. It is quite clear that we can’t be certain. The science isn’t accurate enough to be able to assess the fault lines, the geological studies have been shown to be inaccurate and therefore unless, and until we can be absolutely certain we are imposing a moratorium.”

What's going on with Electoral Calculus, please? Shocking. I'm only a little consoled by the admission their 2017 GE prediction was incredibly wrong.

A parishioner, a plumber, was working today when two Tory canvassers asked if they could rely on his vote. When he said he would be voting Lib Dem or Green, and explained why, one said “you and your sort are the reason this country’s in the mess it’s in today”. Which was nice.

There /was/is no economic or moral justification that stands the barest of scrutiny.
No for or against, pros and cons,on the one hand and the other.Presenting a "balanced"view of the unbalanceable is not only disingenuous but reprehensibly irresponsible.

Did Labour and the LibDems not also support (or at least not, not support) the GE?
I had thought the plan was to go for a referendum before any GE but that appeared to suddenly cave.

Johnson tried repealing that two-thirds fixed term Parliament thing for a GE, failed, then tabled their legislation for a GE requiring nothing more than a simple majority. Can someone explain the device Johnson used, please? Tory government pulled their WA and are hustling nation and people into an intentionally created tough spot.tinyclanger2 wrote:Did Labour and the LibDems not also support (or at least not, not support) the GE?
