The usual suspects are doing a lot of pearl-clutching over this one - talk of rounding up dissidents once Labour has control of the internet. Bless.Ed Miliband

Imaginative, bold, modern, common sense. Broadband is a 21st century basic good, it’s crap and expensive thanks to a privatised industry, it needs to change. This is how it can be done.

From AS.
If anyone needs an excellent example of a non sequitur...here's one now.Rachel Burden asks about yesterday’s A&E waiting times. She says:
Do you feel any sense of same that the NHS has been brought to its knees by a Conservative government?
At this point the caller intervenes, siding with Johnson. She says her personal experience of the NHS has been a good one.
Johnson says he knows that the NHS needs more money. And so it would be crazy to waste next year having two referendums.

An "excess"link only to illustrate,in contrast to the coverage that was the subject of my complaint when they regurgitated the "Labour put people there to hide the unemployment figures (not an out of work benefit),during the Miller years,yet more indisputable proof,despite her protestations ,such repeated bollox was DWP inspired.

Couldn't watch too much of BJ so turned to Sky News where a chap from the CBI was being affronted by the possibility of the private sector not being able to get their mitts on all those lovely broadband billions.

Re: Friday 15th November 2019
Might be worth looking back to 2010 and a reminder that Labour has always favoured a state managed rollout of superfast broadband, rather than the hotpotch of patchy cover the profit-driven private sector has produced under the Tories. It's not just a socialist thing:
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... -broadband" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... -broadband" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Gordon Brown sought to make the provision of "superfast" broadband into an election issue in a speech on Monday, saying it would save government billions of pounds and revolutionise how people access public services.
The prime minister said that the two alternatives for providing high-speed internet connectivity of 100 megabits per second or more, rather than the 4Mbps average in the UK, were between a market-driven process which would "create two nations: one digitally privileged, one digitally deprived" and the Labour approach, using money from a landline tax and surplus cash from the BBC licence fee to assure universal coverage.

Makes more sense than the Conservative's "plan", and might be within the budget of £500m which is apparently all that's on offer.

A fairly long read about economics, I may be alone in finding it interesting, but if not, enjoy.

According to Skidelsky, the pattern was to repeat itself again and again, in 1797, the 1840s, the 1890s, and, ultimately, the late 1970s and early 1980s, with Thatcher and Reagan’s (in each case brief) adoption of monetarism. Always we see the same sequence of events:
(1) The government adopts hard-money policies as a matter of principle.
(2) Disaster ensues.
(3) The government quietly abandons hard-money policies.
(4) The economy recovers.
(5) Hard-money philosophy nonetheless becomes, or is reinforced as, simple universal common sense.
if shares are always correctly priced, bubbles and crises cannot be generated by the market….
This attitude leached into policy: “government officials, starting with [Federal Reserve Chairman] Alan Greenspan, were unwilling to burst the bubble precisely because they were unwilling to even judge that it was a bubble.” The EMH (efficient market hypothesis) made the identification of bubbles impossible because it ruled them out a priori.
If there is an answer to the queen’s famous question of why no one saw the crash coming, this would be it.

Re: Friday 15th November 2019
Thread, maybe I should say another thread, on broadband and why nationalisation isn't neccessary.
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Reminds me of the complaints about New Labour's 'investment' in the NHS, that it had all gone on wages. That's what happens when you employ more people and pay them better.
Then when you get sick you get treated better. This is not a bad thing.

Slower might be a problem, but more costly not so much. Why does it matter? Better to hand money to workers who're going to spend it, and pay tax on it, than to directors and shareholders who are going to stash it offshore.John Fingleton
@JohnFingleton1
Second, #nationalisation is not necessary to achieve any of this. One big risk with nationalisation is that delivery is inefficient, and policy and its benefits are captured by those employed in the nationalised business. If so, this would be seen in slower and more costly rollout.

Re: Friday 15th November 2019
Six local council byelections last week:
Shetland Islands - starting with two contests here, this is still a mostly non-political council where the first division saw four Independents elected in 2017 from five Indy candidates, there were five Indies again this time and the winners got 35% and 33% of first preferences respectively but the second placed candidate came through to win on transfers - the only unsuccessful hopeful two years ago stood again this time, but came third and again missed out despite a slight increase in their share. The other contest saw a three member division which also had five Independent hopefuls in 2017, but three were elected for this one - the winner this time wasn't far off winning outright with 47% on the first round, there were three other unsuccessful Indies but also some variety now with an SNP candidate. They had to be content with 15% and third place, however.
Pembrokeshire - another Independent heavy vacancy which has seen them elected at every election since 2004, on that occasion only opposed by another Indy and in 2008 actually unopposed, saw the top placed of seven(!) Independent hopefuls this time win with 36% of the vote ahead of a Tory who retained their second place from 2017 but with a drop of around 5%. The next placed Indy just beat into fourth place a LibDem hopeful who scored 9% - last time round 3 of the 4 candidates were Independents and the two unsuccessful ones then stood again now - one came fifth with under 8% (slightly down) and the other dropped 11% to just 4% and eighth place. But they still outdid the last placed candidate who amassed just ONE vote - the first time I can recall this in any election for over 10 years.
Chelmsford DC - LibDem hold with approaching half the vote, little changed since earlier this year when they took both seats. This ward has a varied history - Labour winning both councillors in 2003, LibDem clean sweep in 2007 followed by 1LD/1Lab in 2011 and 1C/1LD in 2015. Tories also little changed on about a quarter of the vote, despite this lack of change for the top two the Labour share roughly halved from May - Independents and Greens sharing 12% between them (the former coming just ahead) may do something to explain that.
Cornwall - Independent gain from LibDem with 38% of the vote in a ward that voted Tory in 2009 and 2013 before the LibDems won it in a previous 2016 byelection and held it easily the following year with almost half the vote. Not far behind were the Tories who dropped only slightly on two years ago, this was in contrast to the LibDems who dropped by two thirds to third place and 17%. Greens tried their luck and polled about 8%, this was rather better than the second Independent hopeful who got just 1% (though that *is* in percentage terms not votes, unlike the unfortunate Pembs wooden spooner they did at least scrape into double figures there)
Croydon - Labour hold with just over 40%, a drop of around ten points since last year when they fairly comfortably took all three seats in this ward that had been redrawn after boundary changes. Tories had a high profile campaign here which attracted some wider media attention, so they might be disappointed at clearly dropping in share themselves - Labour's losses may be better explained by the LibDems nearly doubling their share to 19%. Greens also did respectably edging up to 11% and defying the squeeze they often suffer in competitive byelections, a Womens Equality candidate and yet another Independent (in a bumper week for them) with just 1% again were the also rans.
There were eight contests this week, just two of them were not gains for one party or another. Report will follow in due course......
