The Nasty Priti.
Re: Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th November 2019
I'm a bit a bit unclear about the exact mechanism by which the government can arbitrarily decide a UK national can't attempt to enter the country.Home secretary Priti Patel made a last-minute intervention to block a rescue operation to bring British orphans and unaccompanied minors home from Syria, the Observer has revealed.
Why can't the charity organising this simply bring them here anyway and if the government think the kids are a "security risk" (or an election turn off or whatever) they will have to prove it and actually produce grounds to detain them approved by a judge in a transparent process rather than condemn them amongst themselves behind closed doors.

Its been estimated the amount of money the Tories have "pledged" to this might reopen about 1% of the network closed in the 1960s alone.PorFavor wrote:I hope that the multiple tasks include practicing your Reverse Beeching.tinyclanger2 wrote:multi-tasking

Does anyone know if the branch line pledge is a new policy or if it's just a rehash of 2017 plans? There were plans a couple of years ago to reopen a line between Cambridge and Oxford that is still under way, due for completion mid-2020s, for instance. Is Johnson trying to pass off a May policy as his own by any chance?

I've been canvassing for a lot of today, which went well, I think. And this is interesting and a take that hasn't been floated very much
It’s Tory remainers – not Labour leavers – who are the real key to this election
And our candidate canvassed the tory MP which was really classy.

It was only two, but I spoke to two households of lifelong conservative voters today who will not vote for them because of the EU and because of Johnson. I had two long conversations trying to lead them up the path of inevitability that led, here, to the question of whether they wanted to not give their support or whether they actually wanted to do something to stop it, which would without doubt here mean voting labour. We left on good terms with them having something to think about. But there is another group of voters who are also “cross-pressured” in the same way and are perhaps even more cast adrift by their party in recent months: among those who voted Conservative in 2017 a similar three in 10 voted to remain in the European Union. We have heard less about this group, but they could also be key to the parties’ fortunes.

A little known fact is that you can get a discount on the check up according to number of teeth, mine is 50%.
It may be possibly little known as I have just made it up,not that I haven't asked.

Did anyone catch Corbyn on Marr?
Pretty much everyone on Twitter says he was great on everything except Brexit, where of course his "nuanced" approach doesn't go down well with many commentators.
Johnson has absolutely got to keep the idea going that this is the "Brexit Election". Labour has absolutely got to stop that happening. Not sure how they do. Events (floods etc.) may yet play a part I guess.

Any thoughts on the likelihood of Johnson (and indeed Swinson) losing their seats?
Re: Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th November 2019
I thought this was kind of interesting. I think it's worrying that those within the Tory party that might have mitigated somewhat the far right populist movement that is currently dominating the party are, one way or another, falling away. Will the Tory party that is re-elected be significantly different or will the sea change prove superficial, with new recruits more resembling their predecessors than Farage's Brexiteers?

I didn't catch the part about Brexit but his joke about Andrew Marr's teeth was a bit cringy and detracted rather from some good points about free dental checks.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:Did anyone catch Corbyn on Marr?

Re: Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th November 2019
I was about to post a long rambling comment about the problems with dentistry and what needs to be done to fix it only to realise the only way to really fix it properly would be to ban Tory governments. Anything else is just a never-ending cycle of taking two terms to get it sorted just for the Tories to come back and fuck it up again.
For those who are still interested in how to fix dentistry, the short answer is "nationalise it". If anyone doubts me, just look into the current state of things, the growing number of dental practices now owned by large national and even multinational companies and you'll see what I mean. It's unfixable in its current state. NHS trained dentists need to be employed by NHS practices to provide NHS services at reasonable prices either to the taxpayer or to the individual patient, it doesn't really matter, what matters is separating it from the private sector that is currently leeching out all the money in return for less and less value for money to either the taxpayer or the patient, whoever pays for it.

@Willow
Good post.
Dentistry is a "service" we all need to a greater or lesser extent and so it should be both economic and social common sense to share the burden.

Re: Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th November 2019
We should nationalise primary care, too.
The same case applies. When private sector GPs or dentists were mostly self-employed, the NHS paying them to treat NHS patients more or less worked because the GPs and dentists were only looking to pay themselves a decent wage out of that NHS income.
Now more and more dentist and GP practices are owned by a third party. So now that NHS income has to support not just the GP and dentist's wages plus the cost of their premises but also the cost of the wages of all the employees of that third party and their premises too and eventually, one presumes, produce profit for shareholders as well, if we continue down this path.

IMO the only way for us to keep the NHS long-term is PR.Willow904 wrote:I was about to post a long rambling comment about the problems with dentistry and what needs to be done to fix it only to realise the only way to really fix it properly would be to ban Tory governments.
