Morning all.
Re: Thursday 5th December 2019
How on earth has Corbyn managed to mess up a question on the Queen's speech?

I'd guess because he had no idea they'd make such a big deal of it. Who cares?

What an absolute disgrace
@jeremycorbyn
is, going off to help at a homeless shelter on Christmas every year, rather than watching a 10-minute broadcast by one of the world’s wealthiest landladies and corgi owners. Mendacious.

I don't care whether he watches it or not but if he does something else on a Christmas afternoon why not just say so, that's my point. As you say, it's not a big deal, whatever the tabloids try to make of it. But this, this is just baffling:gilsey wrote:I'd guess because he had no idea they'd make such a big deal of it. Who cares?

Corbyn appeared to be caught out by ITV’s Julie Ethchingham when asked if he watched the Queen’s Christmas broadcast. He said “It’s on in the morning, usually we have it on some of the time.” The speech is broadcast at 3pm.

Re: Thursday 5th December 2019
Corbyn came across better in the video clips shown on the news this morning, talking about Labour policies while on a train. The Boris Johnson clip that followed was really awkward and kind of funny in comparison. It reminded me of the Windy Miller bit in Camberwick Green - "Hello Mr Johnson, what are you doing today?". I wish I could find the clip to share, it was really quite odd.

4 Brexit Party MEPs Lance Forman, Annunziata Rees-Mogg, John Longworth and Lucy Harris have all given up on Farage's party and joined the Tories. I hope they'll do the decent thing and resign their seats. Oh - and that's it. Game over for @nigel_farage

You could easily argue that 'it's on in the morning, usually we have it on some of the time' means 'the tv is on in the morning but not necessarily later on'.

Not just that, but when Jez was a young un it *was* in the morning - firstly on the wireless (as we still called it then) and later for a while on TV.
Even by the usual standards of manufactured "controversies", this one is embarrassing to all concerned.

The Lib Dems have sent out a big mailshot to "Squeeze" voters in marginals advising them on tactical voting and signed by Mike Smithson.

If it ends up the case that Johnson isn't interviewed by Neil before polling day, there have to be consequences for certain people at the BBC.

Good morfternoon.
Edited - tidy up
Boris Johnson won't do ITV interview with Julie Etchingham
ITV said: “Every other leader of Great Britain’s main political parties that has been approached has done an interview for Tonight.”
The prime minister has faced mounting criticism of his refusal to be interviewed by Andrew Neil on the BBC. (Politics Live, Guardian)

Re: Thursday 5th December 2019
Despotic leadership is bad enough but it's made worse by publicity agents and the media telling everyone despotic leadership is what everyone wants. I'm angry. Johnson isn't fit for public office. His actions and words make him unfit for public office.

(cJA bold)"One of the dangers Labour faces is that they appear to be promising too much. Voters are skeptical of manifesto promises at the best of times, even though evidence suggests that in the past most manifesto pledges are fulfilled. If you promise so much it is possible voters will just not believe you can do all this.
In contrast the Tory manifesto is positively frugal. But there is a reason for this, and neither Labour nor the Liberal Democrats have emphasized enough why that is. Labour are not used to trumpeting the results of IFS election analysis, but on this occasion they really should. That analysis shows that one economic issue alone dominates the future of the public finances: Brexit. Here is the key chart What this chart shows is that all these give-aways do not come close to matching the amount of tax we will lose if Johnson keeps his pledge not to extend the transition period. The reason the Tory manifesto is frugal is they cannot afford to do anything with any fiscal cost and implement a hard or no deal Brexit. Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats can afford much more, because they are not planning a hard Brexit."

You might think "blatant lie" - I couldn't possibly comment...Full Fact said: "Sajid Javid claimed that homelessness is down by almost half since 2008. The evidence we've seen points to almost the exact opposite."
The fact-checking group added on its website that it is "not aware of any data" which supports Mr Javid's claim, adding: "Statuatory homelessness in England fell between 2003 and 2009. It has risen around 39 per cent since then."

https://www.theguardian.com/news/2019/d ... tal-wealthGap between rich and poor grows alongside rise in UK's total wealth
Top 10% of households had 45% of national wealth in 2018, while the poorest 10th had just 2%
Britain’s total wealth grew by 13% in the two years to 2018 to reach a record £14.6tn, with wealth among the richest 10% of households increasing almost four times faster than those of the poorest 10%.
A study by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also found that the poorest 10% of households had debts three times greater than their assets compared with the richest 10% who amassed a wealth pile 35 times larger than their total debts.
The figures highlight the growing divide between those at the top of the wealth ladder, many of whom have retained their pension rights, property values and invested their savings since the 2008 financial crash, while those on low incomes live in rented accommodation with meagre pension entitlements and rising debts (Guardian)

A chancellor so expert in the misremembering stakes is of no import compared to knowing what time the Queen doesn't make her xmas message or not;let's get some perspective.

I always leave out a glass of sherry and a mince pie for the Quing - just in case she decides to deliver her message during the early hours - and a bunch of carrots for the corgis.
