Tory vote share stays at peak of 42% a week to go before election day
No big moments like the "dementia tax" this time around. Could come down to turnout and who cares more about keeping the party they don't like out.

Present polling relies on a few assumptions that may or may not be correct - eg differential turnouts by age and weighting to a referendum that was now over 3 years ago.

(the latter is something that wasn't as much of a problem in 2017, when it was less than a year away)

So the Christmas tree is up. Cat no. 1 has already tried to eat it. Can't remember what it tastes like from last year, I guess. First Christmas for cat no. 2 who has finally gone flop after all the excitement.

Only thing left is to see what kind of Christmas we'll be waking up to on the 13th - It's a Wonderful Life or the Poseidon Adventure.

Good on you Garry.

Gary Neville criticises PM after fan accused of racism at Manchester derby
“You are watching the prime minister’s debate where he is talking about migration to this country and people having to have certain levels. It fuels it all the time. It has got worse over the last few years in this country and not just in football,” said Neville, a former Manchester United and England international.

He added: “[This fan] thinks he can come to a game and racially abuse someone playing football. It is disgusting. It is terrible and something has to be done. It is not just about banning him from football. Everyone has a responsibility.”

John McDonnell explaining how stay at home parents who will lose the benefit of passing on their unused tax threshold to their partners (married tax allowance) will be compensated by higher minimum wage, free childcare and better wages in the public sector. Except our household won't benefit from any of those things.

He also said the pensions the Waspi women lost that they're borrowing a huge amount to repay were "a right, not a benefit".

So the Waspi women got to collect their family allowance when raising their own families without judgement, while todays families have faced enormous cuts to benefits to families that are not to be reversed or "compensated" because they're a "benefit not a right". They also got to benefit from MIRAS by being married, but current couples won't get similar. And they're being compensated for a change in their retirement age but not other women whose retirement age has risen since they began work and not everyone who has seen a rise from 65 to 66.

Child poverty has risen substantially since 2010 but I've not heard anything about how Labour would reverse this. Nothing about the collapse in SEN spending in schools. The cuts to Sure Start centres. Just "free childcare" and "minimum wage", get parents back into work stuff, we've had for the last nine years.

Surely to achieve real change, we have to change the narrative, we have to get away from the idea that older people have "rights" while younger people only have conditional and changeable "benefits".

An appalling fact I learnt just now: At least 135,000 children will be in temporary accommodation this Christmas, the highest level for 12 years. 183 children become homeless every day. That’s 915 between now and the general election and 3,294 between now and Christmas Day.

As you say, it's the bare minimum. Even with the end of the two-child limit, a family with 3 children will still be worse off in real terms than in 2010 because of the austerity hit to living standards and working age benefits which were detached from the cost of living, unlike pensions. Our expectations of how much we should look after families and people of working age has changed radically over the last 9 years and we haven't even started to reverse that trend judging by the priorities Labour are now concentrating on. Funding for schools was a big issue among families at the last election, as was tuition fees. I know those things are still in the manifesto but they aren't being talked about much. I understand Labour need older voters but courting them involves offering more of the same because that's what they want which, for me, is making for a less inspiring campaign than last time. Especially as the constrained nature of the manifesto last time at least offered an explanation for not reversing the austerity cuts to benefits to families, the disabled and working age people. Whereas this time....

Labour commitments on tackling climate change do compensate somewhat, they have been much more inspiring on green issues this time around. I just get a sense of a lack of understanding of just how deep the austerity cuts went and how they affected the political and economic balance between those who mostly derive income from work and those who mostly derive income from assets. The minimum wage rise is offset by withdrawal of tax credits. The Waspi compensation will be offset by withdrawal of benefits for the poorest. There are significant consequences to tackling injustices or policy issues in the wrong order

Surprise surprise, our working time policies are being misrepresented. Obviously, sometimes people use shorthand, but no, @UKLabour is not pledging a four day week, and at no point in our manifesto do we advocate for one. Here’s what we do say: (1/9)
Why do I get the feeling the people opposing working less for the same/more money aren't the ones currently being expected to work more for less.

Liverpool refuse to reconsider Sun ban to host England game

https://www.football365.com/news/liverp ... I4ln9_DSRQ
England’s 13-year wait to play at Anfield will continue due to Liverpool’s ban on Sun journalists.

Liverpool’s stadium has not hosted the Three Lions since a friendly against Uruguay in March 2006, and Anfield has been ‘deemed off limits’ despite the FA’s struggle in finding a suitable venue for a Euro 2020 warm-up game against Romania next year.

I watched the City v United game yesterday and saw in real time the guy they are claiming was making monkey gestures. And he wasn't. He was being a dick, waving his arms about in exaggerated fury, but he was not making monkey gestures. The man is simply an imbecile.

And I say this as a Manchester United supporter.
