She's making an announcement at 3pm. Guessing it's withdrawing.

Jess Phillips confirms she is withdrawing from Labour leadership contest

Jess Phillips has released a video message confirming she is withdrawing from the leadership contest. (Politics Live, Guardian).
Of course it's via video! So much more scope for emoting . . .

Lisa Nandy has issued this statement about getting the GMB nomination. She said:

Labour is at a crossroads. To win again we will have to up our game, recover our ambition, and inspire a movement. The GMB, the biggest industrial union which speaks for more than half a million workers, has been offering that leadership time and time again in recent years. As I seek permission to lead us back to power as Labour’s next prime minister I could not be more proud to have their support.
(Politics Live, Guardian - my emphasis)

Quite.

I do find all the MSM stuff about Labour members incredibly offensive. As though I can't think for myself?

Some would say that the very fact that views differ among members and evidence more variance, subtlety and complexity than the majority of "journalists "exhibit themselves would suggest the extent of the relative amount of thought, involved.

They had been on a long journey together, from the political wilderness to the brink of government, but they believed their electoral chances had been crushed, in what one rueful Labour source called, “the Brexit vice”.
Corbyn always gave the impression he just wanted to get Brexit out of the way so he could get on with tackling the political questions he felt were more important. Except the 2016 referendum result made our future relationship with the EU the most important political question of our time. A question Corbyn had no real understanding of or desire to get to grips with. The reason Labour failed to adopt a convincing Brexit policy is because its leader never fully understood the ins and outs of the question and gave every impression he didn't really care beyond thinking trade and stuff was all a bit "capitalist".

I still think Labour should have adopted a soft Brexit policy inside the single market in opposition to Tory hard Brexit outside the SM right from the off, changing the fundamental question from in/out into what kind of Brexit. The People's Vote campaign grew into the disaster it always looked like for Labour because for too long Labour's Brexit policy, outside the single market, tended to endorse Tory Brexit policy rather than offer real and distinct opposition to it.

The election wasn't lost by Labour leavers voting Tory to get Brexit, it was lost by Labour voters going everywhere - Libdem, Green, Brexit Party, Tory plus staying at home. Corbyn was reasonably good at anti-austerity stuff in 2017 when Theresa May also talked about everything else but 2019 was about Brexit and Brexit was something Corbyn completely and utterly sucked at from start to finish. From the appalling speech post-EU referendum which almost cost him the leadership to the unconvincing committal to insipid neutrality in a further referendum during the election just gone, he had an unnerving ability to tap into the Brexit instincts of barely anyone. He went from insisting Labour couldn't been seen to be blocking Brexit to doing precisely that in aid of the ERG in voting down May's WA at the one point where blocking Brexit was actually the bigger risk.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's a shame. He was just the wrong man at the wrong time, but that's the real art of politics, isn't it? There's no one right person, just the right person at the right time. And unfortunately the Tories are much better at understanding and acting on that than Labour.

A Brexit Party MEP has prompted derision after complaining that Britain will have no representation at EU level after it leaves.

Dominic Cummings thinktank called for 'end of BBC in current form'

Dominic Cummings’s thinktank called for the “end of the BBC in its current form” and suggested rightwingers should work to undermine the credibility of the broadcaster, branding it the “mortal enemy” of the Conservative party.

Cummings, who is Boris Johnson’s most powerful adviser, was the director of the New Frontiers Foundation when it called in 2004 for a campaign to target the BBC and the creation of a Fox News equivalent that would not be constrained by impartiality rules. (Guardian)
