The European Commission has produced a map of where it expects Britain to apply internal customs checks between different parts of the UK, under Boris Johnson's Brexit withdrawal agreement.

The prime minister has repeatedly denied that his withdrawal agreement includes customs checks between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but his claim is contradicted by the actual contents of the deal.

EU trade chief Sabine Weyand said that "now that the Withdrawal Agreement has been signed" the EU was was publishing a guide to the deal, "including now the protocol on Northern Ireland will work".

Two slides in the guide include maps illustrating the checks and controls on goods going in both directions: from Great Britain to Northern Ireland and Northern Ireland to Great Britain.

The checks are most substantial in the UK to NI direction: the guide says there will be exit formalities for the UK to determine at British ports like Liverpool.

After that, upon arriving in NI, the UK will have to apply relevant EU rules and carry out any required checks under the Brussels rulebook.

The guide notes that EU institutions have the same oversight as today - with the European Court of Justice having the final world. EU representatives also have the right to be present at the internal British checkpoints and monitor the activity.

Live animals, animal products, and plants will have to face regulatory checks, while industry products will face "risk-based" spot checks between the two parts of the UK.

Some tariffs will have to be paid if the good is considered "at risk of entering the EU". EU legislation on VAT and excise will apply.
Indy

That's going to go down well.

Yeah, "interesting" views as to who is really "pulling the strings."
It was a hatchet job, ridiculously one sided and full of innuendo.

And suspect I'm not alone in expecting that interest in AS within Labour will now abate amongst many of the usual suspects.

It has served its purpose, after all.

"One of the famous anecdotes about him concerns his attendance at a state banquet in Peru in 1966 where he was told he was expected to dance with the President's wife. After drinking heavily, he approached a lady in a red dress, tapped her on the shoulder and issued his invitation. She declined with the response: “First, you are drunk. Second, this is not a waltz, it is the Peruvian national anthem. And third, I am not a woman, I am the Cardinal Archbishop of Lima.”

Unite have backed the RLB/Burgon dream/nightmare (delete according to ideological preference) ticket.

That gets her on the ballot IIRC, and is a fairly obvious attempt to ensure the same for him.

To be fair, the previously mentioned replacement of Brown was as far as the left was concerned to provide balance. It is hard, for me at least, given the passing of time, how far right,or indeed left,in today's terms those so ascribed then would be now.Of course, for better or worse those that now choose has been extended. That being the case I will accept the result, but keep my fingers very much crossed.

Beyond despising the Tory Party, the idea that anybody has "made it" by their efforts alone and associated guff, the notion of any "betters" and a desire for the State not to decide but facilitate, subject to necessary protections, rights, structures and facilities, people to self organise as much as possible,I am afraid my ideology? has n't passed the development stage or indeed even be described on such a level.I have no idea as to "socialism",never mind on that continuum

FWIW whatever the truth or generality of the young versus the older selfish and extent of divergence,oh for the young to particularly be interested or indeed give a shit never mind even contemplate voting Labour here when very much of the Toryish persuasion if not "all the same"opinion and it is the older that keeps the party functioning at all;I would question the tactic?of expressing in such terms which only alienates/reinforces further,or not?

And also the oft repeated "low educational attainment"stuff in such sneeringly assumptive dismissive terms.I've got several letters, after my name,I am as thick as the proverbial plank and possess a woeful lack of knowledge ie.it really doesn't tell you much apart from those that continually use it as some kind of definitive general statement ie "thick"

Aspire to be the best that you can be.Differently interpretable, there is no joy or sense of achievement in non recognition of the necessary others or indeed non sharing in the experience in the collectivist sense of achievement or worth.I happen to not run marathons, the joy is that collectivity, annoying Sky in taking over the streets, albeit only for a few hours, imagining a trampled Tory head on every step ,a reversal of the norm whereby particularly uselessness is cheered ever more etc

It may be at least partly that the bastard Tory and union of arsehole party has moved so far to the right that the far too paternalist ascription has been applied to Labour, though in my mind there as alwauys been that element in view and practice within.

Not to say that paternalism in itself is necessarily a wholly bad thing.Of course dependent on definition and how it "reveals" itself.Governments of all stripes can appropriate/redefine as they see fit.Often the language, largely bollox without at least some clarity beyond patter by both are the same but can result in widely different expositions.Let the people decide can mean let them die.
