Rates of insolvency among women over 65 rapidly increasing
Across all age groups insolvency rate of women overtaken men
It has often been commented that austerity hit women harder than men. This is almost certainly, at least in part, a consequence of those political decisions.

Excellent comment BTL on the guardian - if we want to understand what 'leveling up' really involves, we need to look at Germany since reunification. Tax surcharges and focused spending of around €100bn a year for 20 years.

And even then, three decades on the inequalities between the former GDR and the rest are often still pretty obvious.

Viv Marsh
@vivmarshuk
Interesting thing about the replies to this (which are overwhelmingly anti-freedom of movement) is that they still don't see this as *our* freedom of movement as well, but solely as an immigration issue.
Viv Marsh is responding to Politics Home tweeting this piece:

Keir Starmer says he would bring back EU freedom of movement if he becomes Prime Minister

Brings to mind the article linked here the other day, about the leader needing to be a teacher.

Johnson/Barnier speeches on trade talks expose deep gulf between UK and EU on standards and fishing

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/li ... -live-news" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

What the EU wants sounds more in the UK's interests than what the UK wants.

We keep circling back to the old contradiction. Minimum standards don't rule out higher standards, they just rule out lower standards. So why would a country supposedly committed to higher standards be against signing up to minimum ones?

They wouldn't. We know that, the EU knows that. Our government is a joke.

Johnson says the idea of a level playing field is not an agreed concept. The Political Declaration, alongside the Withdrawal Agreement, says (para 77)
Given the Union and the United Kingdom’s geographic proximity and economic interdependence, the future relationship must ensure open and fair competition, encompassing robust commitments to ensure a level playing field. The precise nature of commitments should be commensurate with the scope and depth of the future relationship and the economic connectedness of the parties. These commitments should prevent distortions of trade and unfair competitive advantages. To that end, the Parties should uphold the common high standards applicable in the Union and the United Kingdom at the end of the transition period in the areas of state aid, competition, social and employment standards, environment, climate change, and relevant tax matters.
Again, nothing Johnson says should be believed.

And another very good BTL comment from the guardian
Would British security services perhaps be a bit less stretched, if Pritti Patel had not sought to label climate activists as terrorists?

Since Tory government don't bother with honesty and accountability, I'll try appealing to their vanity. Behaving like Trump is a total fashion don't. Copying his jackass antics adds further inducement for derision.

For four years under Tony Blair's government I worked for the Daily Mail. His No10 absolutely hated us - you might say justifiably - and yet we were never banned from any briefing involving civil servants under his government, ever.

More
I remember asking Blair, live on TV, during one press conference about the number of dead soldiers in Iraq. It was deeply uncomfortable for him. But I still got invited back to the next one.

Also this idea there should be "technical" and "specialist" separate briefings where some political journalists are excluded is a joke excuse - this is about THE major plank of Johnson's post-Brexit policy, all outlets and their readers have a right to know the details
Bit of an own goal I feel...

The above article says 2.6m people are already on universal credit. The following is a few years old but provides some useful context, I feel:
The welfare state is a big part of British family life, with 20.3 million families receiving some kind of benefit (64% of all families), about 8.7 million of them pensioners
