Michael Gove has refused to name any economists who back Britain’s exit from the European Union, saying that “people in this country have had enough of experts”.

Newsnight interviewing Nigel Farage about the coronavirus. Did I miss something? Did every last person other than Nigel Farage die of the coronavirus leaving them with no other choice?

It's worse than that, after Farage they had Andrew Lansley.

Re: Tuesday 10th March 2020
Shocking.
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/202 ... o-years-on" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; After the government apologised for its Windrush mistakes in 2018, Bynoe applied for and quickly received documentation confirming that he was in the UK legally. He applied for compensation as soon as the scheme opened a year ago, but has received no money and remains considerably in debt because of the period of enforced unemployment. Last August, he was told he was going to be evicted from the bedsit he rented because of arrears. He asked the Home Office for an emergency payment, under the Windrush vulnerable persons scheme (designed for precisely this kind of situation), but this was refused. “We are not satisfied that there is a sufficiently compelling reason to offer a payment or that the circumstances of your request are exceptional,” an official wrote.
---
he applied to the vulnerable persons team for money for a deposit, which it promised to give him months ago, but it has not arrived. Periodically, officials get in touch to ask him for “further evidence”; during one call he was told the request was “being assessed”, later he was told it was with the casework team, then that it was going through “authorisation”, on another day that it was “99.5% processed”; some time later that it was with “finalisation”; then that it was “with`quality control”.
---
Another Home Office spokesperson sent a similar (cut and pasted?) response in relation to a query about Bynoe: “We are determined to right the wrongs experienced by the Windrush generation.” The spokesman said the vulnerable persons team was in regular contact with Bynoe and “provided funds to help him secure a private property”. When I rang him on Monday morning, the money had still not arrived.

But whatever else you say he is a former Health Secretary.

When/if it transpires that our NHS doesn't have the capacity to cope with the virus, the list of those responsible for that state of affairs would surely be headed by Lansley.

Yes, the contrast between the number of NHS beds available now and during the Swine Flu epidemic in 2009 has certainly been made.

Not shocking, the evitable consequence of "to the most vulnerable",superficiality of a "caring"State which both diverts and obfuscates the needless creation of vulnerability whereby the ascertaining of being sufficiently vulnerable becomes all ;if you don't reach it ,you can't be,if you are dead you are no longer so,if you were.

Re: Tuesday 10th March 2020
Seven local council byelections to close February:
Hillingdon - Tory hold, with approaching 70% of the vote and a swing of over 11% from Labour since 2018. A safe ward for the Tories in recent years, this was not always the case - in 2002 the LibDems won all three seats in a close three way contest with Labour edging second, but the Tories came from third place then to take two of the three seats in 2006 and complete the job four years later, after which LibDem support drained away as in so many places during the coalition years to the point where they did not even stand in 2018. They did now, but had to be content with 4% - which was at least enough to beat the Greens and UKIP (the latter with just 0.8%)
Cheshire East - Labour hold with nearly 55% of the vote, and as with the recent Derbyshire CC election this held some outside interest as the winning Labour candidate was also an MP until December (Crewe and Nantwich, in this instance) Slightly less impressive result this time though in a ward that has returned two Labour councillors since being set up in its present form in 2011 - Tories got a ten point increase to 35% and a swing of over 8%. It may be worth noting however that the swings since 2015 and 2011 were distinctly more modest, illustrating how badly the Tories did in this council last year even by the generally dismal national standard. Greens third with 4%, followed by two Independents on both extremes on the political spectrum as it happens - and this time the left edged out the right.
Wrexham - Plaid gain from Independent in a fragmented fight in which their 37% was enough for a two to one win over second placed Labour. This single member ward was safe for Labour in 2004/08/12 - the last saw them get over 70% in a straight fight with Plaid - but the retirement of the sitting councillor saw an Independent storm to victory with 40% of the vote. Plaid did not stand then, but improved their last showing by 9% whilst Labour dropped another 10 points from 2017. Tories also down by 5 points despite cleaning up in these parts at the last GE - then the first of three Independents with 10%, another Indy then the LibDems on 8% (slightly down on their previous 2004 score) and then the final Independent ahead of a Green who scored just nine votes overall.
Cambridgeshire CC/South Cambridgeshire DC - a "double header" here saw similar sized swings of around 20% in two straight Tory/LibDem contests but different results; firstly the district contest saw a Tory win by 55-45, an eight point drop for them since the 2018 all out elections following boundary changes when Labour came a distant second here and the Greens also stood - their absence enabled the LibDems to come close with a 30 point jump. The county division - where the previous 2017 result was also the first following boundary changes - saw the LibDems triumph by nearly 60-40, after the Tories had taken over well half the vote three years ago despite Labour and UKIP then also standing.
Blaby DC - Labour hold with over half the vote in this single member ward which has an interesting recent electoral history - a narrow Tory win in 2003 was followed by Labour being returned unopposed (!) in 2007 as they were again in another good Tory year, 2015. Meanwhile in 2011 and last year they beat the Tories by modest margins. So to win now with actually a small swing in their favour was a very creditable result - for the first time this century another candidate broke the Labour/Tory duopoly here, but the Greens could only manage around 5%.
Manchester - Independent gain from Labour, this redrawn ward comfortably returned three Labour councillors in the 2018 all-out elections but a sign of things to come was an Independent coming runner-up, easily beating all the other "party" candidates. Last year they advanced majorly to finish just a dozen votes behind Labour and it was maybe not such a surprise that they finished the job now, an increase of 3% and swing of 2% being enough. Labour may actually have lost this one on postal votes and were only just down on a year ago - as for the also-rans (and they very much were that here) Tories edged up to 4%, beating both the LibDems and Greens (third in 2019) who went the other way.
Two contests to belatedly start this month, one of them actually taking place today.

What impact is the current social care funding situation having on the NHS?
What level of funding is required in each of the next five years to address this?
What is the extent of current workforce shortages in social care, how will they change over the next five years, and how do they need to be addressed?
As others have said reducing social care to a means of lessening pressure on the NHS will not help(either)

Way to do it of course .There used to be a recognition of minimal housing support for homeowners for those that became ill cared/self cared at-home this vast cost saving doing the absolutely the correct thing was deemed unfair to the perfectly well.

Is it genuine thickness about what social care is or an unrecognised in their selves disregard beyond "safe, secure,it's cheaper)of peoples' wishes and needs?
