Re: Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th April 2020
Oops.
Police have visited Scotland’s chief medical officer Dr Catherine Calderwood and issued her with a warning after she visited her second home.
Scotland’s chief constable Iain Livingstone said in a statement:
'Earlier today, local officers visited Dr Catherine Calderwood and spoke to her about her actions, reiterated crucial advice and issued a warning about her future conduct, all of which she accepted.
The legal instructions on not leaving your home without a reasonable excuse apply to everyone.'

I hope these rumours the government wants to effectively ban outdoor exercising aren't true, it would surely be impossible to enforce effectively apart from anything else.

This is a much better idea.

Just go outside into your garden to exercise instead...
What about people without gardens? People living in flats, for example.

Recent UK media reporting about COVID-19, how deaths are being reported alarm me
Most would've died anyway, died with COVID-19 (not died from COVID-19)
edited to emphasise what's alarming me

I've got a rather poky backyard, as it happens I am taking this opportunity to clean it up. The all too common assumption everybody has a nice garden is very revealing, though.

On outside space:
I have a walled terrace about 2.5 x 1.5 m. Full of plants which is nice, but means I can't actually sit in it.
This is considerably more than I've had throughout my adult life (ie: = 0).

Just received a courteous phone call from @Keir_Starmer standing me down from Shadow Cabinet. I wished him and his new team well.
I will continue to do all I can to serve the party and ensure a Labour victory at the next General Election.

I think media management of this crisis is this government's priority, not effective public service provision saving lives. I wish I were wrong. I live in a densely populated, urban area. I'm often angry and frightened.

It's good having greenery, live things to look at. Even looking at them through a window helps. We need more than that, of course. I'm glad you've got your plants. The citizens have a kitchen windowsill for our thriving orchids.tinyclanger2 wrote:On outside space:

Anneliese Dodds is the new Shadow Chancellor, good and correct choice. Lisa Nandy gets the Foreign brief, genuinely interesting.

Re: Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th April 2020
Have we seen this? It's over a week old but just arrived in an e-mail.National Audit Office (NAO)
Published March 25, 2020
Water supply and demand management
- The country’s total water supply is forecast to drop by 7% by 2045 because of climate change and the limits of sustainable abstraction.
- Almost all of the public water supply is obtained through abstraction from ground and surface water sources... .
- Even at current levels of average rainfall, a reduction of 480 million litres per day of water consumption is needed nationally within 25 years to restore abstraction to sustainable levels.
- Over the last five years, water companies have made little or no progress in reducing water consumption and cutting leakage.
- Efforts to reduce water consumption with the public and businesses have not been successful.
- The government committed to announcing a personal water consumption target by the end of 2018, but has not yet done so.
- [Government] has relied on water companies to get its message across about the importance of reducing water consumption, but there is no evidence this has had any impact on consumer behaviour and average consumption continues to rise.
Re: Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th April 2020
So Jonathan Ashworth stays as Health Secretary. I guess there's some sense in that, not really the time to drop someone in at the deep end and he's been fairly capable in the role. I think a few Allin-Kahn fans may be disappointed though.

Without a similar role for Long-Bailey it could ruffle some feathers and we've already run out of comparable roles, I believe.

No, genuinely "interesting". She isn't exactly a big #FBPE-er so it maybe counteracts several of the "lexiteers" leaving the SC.

From an outsider's perspective Rebecca Long-Bailey should be kept well away from any role whatsoever.Willow904 wrote:Without a similar role for Long-Bailey it could ruffle some feathers and we've already run out of comparable roles, I believe.

When we get back to normal times, the inconsistency between the "free speech on campus" and Prevent needs being made clear.Nick Thomas-Symonds – shadow home secretary
He took over from Jo Steven as shadow solicitor general in 2016, and the following year took on the additional role of shadow security minister in Diane Abbott’s home affairs team, where he has been a critic of the Prevent anti-extremism programme.

Not that I've got anything in particular against her, but she has neither got a long history of working 'pro bono' for good causes , nor has even a longtime membership of the LP ?

Well this is refreshing, Starmer seems to be filling the top shadow cabinet jobs with capable people.
My only concern would be Anneliese Dodds, she's evidently a smart woman but after seeing her on QT more than once she can be a bit wishy washy when faced with criticism. She reminds me more of a middle aged hippy counsellor than a shadow chancellor.
I mean I liked John McDonnell but unfortuntaley the captain of that ship didn't just drive it aground, he set fire to it then destroyed the rest with explosives.

Re: Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th April 2020
I genuinely have no idea Froggy, I'm not a member of the Labour Party, all I can base my criticism on is her performance on TV. And that has been abysmal. Every single appearance on QT Rebecca Long-Bailey has been awful. And she has been on a lot. And in each and every performance she displayed that ideological zeal that precludes rational thought.frog222 wrote:Not that I've got anything in particular against her, but she has neither got a long history of working 'pro bono' for good causes , nor has even a longtime membership of the LP ?

The realistic alternative to Dodds was Reeves (who has actually been given a post that sounds pretty grand but is of somewhat more nebulous actual significance)Sky'sGoneOut wrote:Well this is refreshing, Starmer seems to be filling the top shadow cabinet jobs with capable people.

Given that, many of us are pretty happy with the choice Starmer made.

I'd have gone for Rachel Reeves, she's a truly impressive politician. But she's got nobody to blame but herself for being relegated to the nebulous dustbin she herself consigned herself to.AnatolyKasparov wrote:The realistic alternative to Dodds was Reeves (who has actually been given a post that sounds pretty grand but is of somewhat more nebulous actual significance)

Does Johnson being hospitalised mean Starmer v Raab? A former Director of Public Prosecutions v a man who always looks nervous that the body in the Thames wasn’t weighted down enough?
