Morning all.
I heard the new Shadow Chancellor on Today earlier - no real specifics which you can expect at this stage but sounded confident, no sliip-ups.
I wonder when the EHRC report is due? If it comes out as critical of the party organisation, it would give the new leader a chance to overhaul it completely. Clean slate.

It was originally due in January wasn't it? My personal suspicion has long been that it may be slightly more nuanced than some may have expected or indeed wanted.

Re: Monday 6th April 2020
I thought Diane Abbott was surprisingly effective as shadow health minister. Shadow home was possibly an over-promotion, though, and I'm not sure it really benefited her or the party, but she was consistently strong on immigration rights, so I have to respect her for that.
I'm afraid to say I really won't be missing any of the others, though. McDonnell had his moments, but far too few and far between, whereas Corbyn - well, I have never got what people see in him. Neither to adore or to despise. All I ever saw was a mediocre, well-meaning backbencher, principled, yes, but dull of thinking, inflexible and out of his depth. Elected to oppose austerity, he was poorly equipped to deal with Brexit and too stubborn to admit it. Even so, he would undoubtedly have made a better fist of dealing with coronavirus than Boris and the UK public were monumental fools to pick Johnson in preference. I can only hope they come to realise it.

Gwynne is the most surprising name out of that lot, partly for personal reasons it appears.

I just looked Lammy's wiki biog up - Masters in Law from Harvard law School and called to the bar in 1994.
So that is a good fit. Not on Buckland's level of course in law but able.
And good to see Ed M back again.

Good to see and though a 'lesser' role than the one given to Nandy in terms of prestige, it's going to be a very busy shadow role given the impact of coronavirus on schools and exams.· Rebecca Long-Bailey, Shadow Education Secretary

Slightly surprised that Butler and Maskell are out, and personally I would have McGovern joining the front line from the right rather than Phillipson.
But overall, not too bad.

I think it's quite a talented list - and judicious, too.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Slightly surprised that Butler and Maskell are out, and personally I would have McGovern joining the front line from the right rather than Phillipson.

I actually quite like Dawn Butler, and think it's a shame that she couldn't have been found a job. It would have been "judicious" to have her on-side - pre-supposing that an appointment to a shadow cabinet post secures on-sidedness.

In October 2019, one of Corbyn's advisors accused Butler of homophobia after she said that "90 per cent of giraffes are gay" at the PinkNews awards. (Wikipedia)

If Dominic Raab is PM’s stand in while PM in hospital but PM still running things, why has Mr Raab not spoken to PM since Saturday? Something not right here.

Re: Monday 6th April 2020
Lots of replies insisting Raab said he hadn't spoken to the PM in person since Saturday and basically rubbishing this but both Kuenssberg and Peston are running the same line, which is curious in itself. And nothing about Cummings or Chris Whitty, either, who have both been self-isolating for some time as well now. Not exactly reassuring from the top of government, is it?RogerOThornhill wrote:Hmm...

Your lives and the nuclear codes are now in the sure hands of Mr Raab ?
Re: Monday 6th April 2020
The way Peston's tweet's worded I'm not sure whether he's more worried about the PM's health or Raab being in charge.
Personally I'm more worried about the latter.

I wasn't surprised that Johnson went into hospital because it was apparent that he wasn't getting better, and around day 10 is when it can get seriously dangerous by all accounts.
Why they were pressing on with the fiction that he was still in charge I've no idea, PMs are only human and may get ill like anyone else.

I wasn't surprised either . After a week or a bit longer there is a risk of a really sudden decline, something we should all know both for ourselves and those around us . There have even been sudden deaths in the night by NHS staff or self-isolators, so... treat with care . It appears that Johnson has not had the extreme of cytokine storms, so far as we are told ...gilsey wrote:I wasn't surprised that Johnson went into hospital because it was apparent that he wasn't getting better, and around day 10 is when it can get seriously dangerous by all accounts.

Re: Monday 6th April 2020
Pneumonia is well known as a rapid killer. Our neighbour's son died of pneumonia a couple of years ago. He'd made a doctor's appointment for a couple of days time but unfortunately died at home alone before he went. One of the drawbacks of living alone is that there's no one to get help if your condition suddenly gets worse and I've been concerned that there hasn't been strong enough communication about exactly what people need to look out for and when is the right time to request help. There has always been this problem of having quite a small window to get pneumonia treated. The American actress Brittany Murphy famously died of pneumonia aged just 32. People can go downhill very quickly. At least Boris Johnson was being monitored by medical professionals and would have been given the best possible chance by early intervention and treatment.frog222 wrote:I wasn't surprised either . These are the people whose health we should be worrying about. It is with profound sadness that we must inform you that Mr Jitendra Rathod, associate specialist in cardio-thoracic surgery at the University Hospital of Wales, has passed away.
He died early this morning on our general intensive care unit after testing positive for Covid-19.
Jitu had worked in the department of cardio-thoracic surgery since the mid-1990s and came back to UHW in 2006 after a brief stint abroad.
He was an incredibly dedicated surgeon who cared deeply for his patients. He was well-liked and greatly respected by one and all. He was a very compassionate and a wonderful human being.
His commitment to the speciality was exemplary. He is survived by his wife and two sons. We will miss him greatly.
