“” That’s the immediate priority – as an absolute minimum. But more broadly, the public knows this is not a good way to run contact tracing, and it is for all of these reasons that over two-thirds of those surveyed believe local public health teams and local health services should be in charge of the contact tracing system.

The Independent Sage group has already offered a solution that Hancock could take up easily. Put local authorities, local public health teams and local health services (including GPs and NHS laboratories) back in charge of testing and tracing in the community, and give them the resources to do this properly over the coming months and years. This is the system Wales and Scotland have opted for, as has Germany. That would be a test, track and trace programme the public could have faith in. “”

So IndySage is really recommending to just scrap all those £100mns of SECRET contracts then? Well, that's not going to happen is it ?

As pointed out yesterday in Sandwell, quote last night, the public is actually paying twice for Tracing , the local improvised teams working flat out and the Serco/Sitel lot often just sitting around, never knocking on a door !

Daylight Robbery, Secret Contracts , Ch lccccxxiii
“” The British government has spent more than £5.5 billion of taxpayers’ money on personal protective equipment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Was it well spent? We have no way of knowing.

Not even a seventh of the government’s 600 PPE contracts have been published – meaning the public doesn’t know why a company was selected, what it is supposed to provide, who it is owned by, and whether it is solvent or suitably experienced.
....
Overall, public contracting in the UK is now worth an estimated £292 billion annually – one-third of the entire budget – and is one of the most strategically significant areas of government. What the coronavirus crisis shows is that we know too little about who the government pays to do what, and whether it works. “”

North of England: local restrictions
If you live in one of the affected areas, in order to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, you should not:
----meet people you do not live with inside a private home or garden
----visit someone else’s home or garden even if they live outside of the affected areas
----socialise with people you do not live with in other indoor public venues – such as pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, places of worship, community centres, leisure and entertainment venues, or visitor attractions.
----You may attend these venues with people you live with...but should avoid interaction with others.
----If you run such a business, you should take steps to ensure people do not interact with people they do not live with, in line with COVID-19 secure guidance
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/north-west- ... -cannot-do" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(cJA emphasis)

Why are visits in gardens banned but it's okay to go to pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, etcetera as long as you avoid others?
How the hell will people running businesses know where people live?

Fewer than half of the English public fully understand lockdown rules, a study has found. In an ongoing survey of more than 70,000 adults, researchers from University College London found that about 45% of respondents said they had a “broad understanding” of the current rules in England, with only 14% saying they understand the rules completely now lockdown has eased.

I only found out today that in early March in part of the extended family a couple of grandparents ( 76yo...) have had Covid, and two of their three children plus four grandchildren. One 43yo son-in-law does marathons and Ironman , or at least he DID . Now reduced to walking, and not very far at that.

Haven't yet seen any figs for Longhaul Covid which is similar to post-flu viral fatigue, ME, and very very debilitating.

Another reminder to inform oneself and not blindly trust the Useless Ones .

More tests, both for drive-through sites and home delivery, will be made available tomorrow. Please visit this page then.

I read this one this morning --
" By the time Emma* started showing mild symptoms of COVID-19, she was presented with two options: request a Home Testing Kit or attend a drive-through testing facility. As Emma can’t drive, and social distancing meant getting a lift was impossible, she opted for the mail-order kit.

Emma made three attempts to access a Home Testing Kit. Each time she was told her identity couldn’t be verified and therefore she would not receive her test. Instead she was told to attend a drive-through testing centre.

“I thought I might have the virus so I tried to get a test,” Emma told openDemocracy.”In the process I learned in order to get a test you have to have a car you are capable of driving, or a credit check company needs to verify your identity.”

The identity verification for the NHS’s contact tracing programme is contracted to TransUnion, a US company who told openDemocracy they are “supporting the NHS response to the current pandemic in its provision of testing kits to those throughout the UK th

I was supposed to be visiting a friend in Calderdale this Sunday and am seriously confused as to why Leeds has escaped this ban on visiting while Calderdale has a far lower infection rate. It makes a nonsense of the idea this is all down to Eid. Calderdale has a tiny Muslim population, there are more Muslims across the road from me than in the entirety of Halifax and Queensbury combined. Not that it stopped that idiot Tory MP from Calder Valley blaming it on those people. It doesn't make the slightest bit of sense, which comes as no surprise.

Put a thermometer out this lunchtime in the shade and it reached 34° C.

I don't think I've ever felt heat like that in this country in my life, opening the front door was like opening the door to an oven.

Thor tried to help with a bit of thunder this evening but all he's managed to do is leave massive clouds that are keeping the heat in.

Dumbass.

At least today we had Chris Whitty being bluntly honest.

Admitting that we can go this far but no further, we've reached a limit, and any further dicking about is going to make things very bad and kill even more people or just make them very ill with lifelong health consequences.

Given his previous performances I have to say that came as a bit of a welcome surprise.
