Maybe he means the DExEU report saying compliance costs to business of new customs declarations alone will be £13bn p/a.

Personally I don't know any of the lyrics of Land of Hope and Glory or more than two lines of Rule Britannia. We sang Jerusalem at school. A strange nationalistic sort of religious appropriation. Historically speaking, I'm pretty certain "those feet", if they existed, never did touch this ancient land. Anyway, in 'culture war' terms, the singing, or not singing, of a couple of silly songs is not something I can get too exercised about. Is the BBC representing a genuinely offended majority viewpoint with this or are they inventing one?

The Rule Britannia brouhaha is completely made up. No antiracist org has asked for it to be dropped. What’s played at The Proms has never been a major concern of Black Lives Matter.

And yet, those facts don’t seem to matter much to those media organisations covering the furore.

Good point about the singing and coronavirus. I hadn't thought of that. The other problem about coronavirus is that I'm not mixing with other people outside my family as much so I'm losing track of genuine public opinion from across the political spectrum. I have less sense of what people are actually talking about outside of social media. I need to get out more!

An appropriate response from the BBC then the Sunday Times broke this (complete non) "story" could have nipped it all in the bud, though.

One of the problems with the Beeb is that it is a vast unwieldy bureaucracy, so very possibly "both" is a legitimate answer?

Why was Ash Sarkar being invited to discuss the "controversy" by a number of media outlets if a quick call to the BBC would have revealed the boring non-story of the Proms being hit by coronavirus restrictions? Either the BBC is complicit or they all are.

What's really sad is that people not being able to sing along at the Proms this year is a story that the vast majority of people would agree is a shame. It could bring people together against a common viral enemy. To take a story of natural, good-natured national unity and deliberately twist it into one of division and hate is, well, hateful.

Difficult to choose for my favourite morsel --
1 " Besides, it was no big deal. It was only for schools in lockdown areas and on no account were children going to be wearing masks in the classroom. At which point headteachers of all schools everywhere made a note to prepare for pupils wearing masks the whole time. "

or 2 " Still, at least he wasn’t the only one having a tricky day, as around lunchtime Boris Johnson found himself addressing a group of students in a school library. All of whom looked unimpressed and blank throughout.

Every one of Boris’s gags fell flat and his attempt to blame their exam results on “a mutant algorithm” – one that he had himself previously championed – was met with outright hostility. It’s not just Walker and Husain who know bullshit when they hear it. "

A future Tory Party could always explain its failures under Johnson as due to a 'mutant PM' ?

Does anyone have any idea what a 'mutant algorithm' is?

All I can think of is that Johnson is claiming the algorithm achieved sentience, began to evolve, and decided to screw the kids over by itself.

Perhaps next he'll be telling us he's had to sack all the top civil servants involved because they too were mutating into post-human superbeings whose plan to take over the world began with giving state school pupils better exam results.

This is a bit weird, I was watching an old 'Four in a bed' this afternoon (where B&B owners judge each other's accommodation) and one of them claimed to have been a Tory MP under Thatcher, his name was 'Tony Horton' and I'd never heard of him so looked him up and can find no record of an MP under that name. To be fair the bloke did seem a bit batty but why would anyone make such a thing up?

What also has to be mentioned is all the B&B's were in France and charged half the price you'd pay in this country and provided a much nicer breakfast.

I don't know about the rest of you but I've mostly checked out of Westminster politics for the moment.

Under Thatcher, Major, Blair, Cameron and even May you felt at least like you were dealing with people who cared about the long-standing norms and principles of government. And in a country without a written constitution adhering to principles and past precedents is vital for any kind of stable governance. But now that's all gone to shit, Covid 19 has provided the perfect camouflage for outright corruption to a bunch of paranoid shysters who stank to high heaven in the first place. All this crap from the Tories about respecting tradition has proved as robust as a fart in the wind.

Johnson today sounded like the clown that he is, a fool no serious person would take remotely seriously. And yet here we are. With the BBC News getting professors of computing on to discuss what a 'mutant algorithm' might be.

Fuck that.

I understand Starmer and Labour's approach, it's essentially the same as that of the SNP, allow your opponents enough rope to hang themselves. And that's worked in Scotland but England is a completely different matter. Vast Swathes of Southern England aren't just blue they're purple and voting Tory is an act of patriotism to god, England and the queen.

Wake me when the next Scottish independence referendum happens next year.

Until then I'll enjoy the benefits of living in a banana republic I can do nothing about.

(Probably with some moaning and told you so's after January 31'st).

And by that I mean Starmer needs to pull his finger out of his arse.

At the moment there's some nonsense from Johnson, then some ludicrously respectful response from the BBC, then eventually some half arsed mumbling from the Labour Party on Twitter.

As an outside observer it seems to me Labour are missing more open goals than Raheem Sterling.
