Good morfternoon.
Business secretary suggests it's unfair for journalists to ask ministers about details of lockdown rules

Alok Sharma, the business secretary, has suggested that it is wrong for journalists to ask ministers if they know they detail of lockdown restrictions. Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme this morning he said:

There is an element of slightly ‘gotcha’ about this in terms of this line of questioning. You are a flagship programme when it comes to serious news and it is not a quiz show. (Politics Live, Guardian)

Morning all. I'm sure we'll all really shocked about this...

Plans for further English devolution shelved until next year

https://www.ft.com/content/e1e2c392-a2e ... pe=blocked" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Plans for the biggest shake-up in English local government for more than 30 years have been delayed, raising fresh questions over the government’s commitment to “level up” prosperity across England.

The white paper on devolution and local recovery, which was expected this month, has been shelved until next year as the government prioritises battling Covid-19, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

Bob Kerslake, former head of the home civil service, who is chairing the UK2070 Commission on how to close the north-south divide, said he had been told it was postponed until 2021 and the local government reforms scaled back.

“Its emphasis will be less on devolution,” Lord Kerslake said. “It does feel like it has gone backwards. The risk is these things can’t wait a year. They need to be addressed now, notwithstanding Covid.”

He [Johnson] asks Starmer to be a little bit consistent, and to instil confidence in the measures he supports.

So my daughter's covid test has been done. At a pop-up mobile drive-thru. It was pretty orderly and straightforward, thankfully. Lot's of kids have just been attending school with a cough, though, according to the teen grapevine. There's definitely a needle in a haystack element to all this which will either settle down to a more refined and accurate hunt in time or will simply escalate until it becomes all-consuming.

Johnson has again said he doesn't want a full second national lockdown. On past form, expect just that within weeks then.

Find out what support you can get if you’re affected by coronavirus

Use this service to find out what help and advice you can get from the government and other organisations. You can use it for yourself or someone else.

You can find support with:

what to do if you’re feeling unsafe where you live, or if you’re worried about someone else
paying your bills, rent, or mortgage
getting food
being made redundant or unemployed, or not having any work
what to do if you’re worried about going in to work
having somewhere to live
mental health and wellbeing, including information for children

If you need medical help, go to NHS 111 online.

You will not get direct support from the government or organisations through this service.

Collision symbol More blue sky thinking at the Home Office:

Officials discussed laying barriers in the English Channel to stop boats reaching the shore or investigate whether it would be possible to link small boats together to form a barrier to keep migrants away.

Another “blue-sky” idea discussed at the Home Office was to have boats with pumps generating waves that would force boats back into French waters.

But concerns were raised about the risk of capsizing migrants in already-overladen boats.
