Morning all.

"Man who dressed up as chicken" to be new chief of staff at No 10.
Rafael Behr
@rafaelbehr
Big weakness in Johnson govt is confusing something *said* for something *done*. Putting Vote Leave comms person in chief-of-staff role will make that worse. No10 not short of people who know how to campaign. The deficit is people who understand how to govern.

And from the DM story.
The chief of staff will operate as the Prime Minister's 'fixer' at the heart of Government, with the power to issue orders to civil servants across Whitehall.

And the move would fill a 'hole' at the centre of Mr Johnson's administration. Neither Dominic Cummings nor the Prime Minister's other leading adviser Lord Lister want the job.
Hardly a surprise - can you imagine trying to firefight Boris' every cockup?

But yesterday a poll showed that only 3% think Trump definitely won the election. You don't pull off a coup with those sorts of figures.

It seems to be about getting the cash to continue to roll in...

Donald Trump's latest endeavor? Asking his supporters to pay his debts

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyl ... -fund-debt" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But if you scroll down, past the information about the “Left-wing MOB” trying to “undermine our election”, you’ll see some fine print. On Trump’s personal fund, it dictates that of all donations raised, only 50% will go towards a recount effort, and that “50% of each contribution, up to a maximum of $2,800 ($5,000), [will] be designated toward DJTFP’s 2020 general election account for general election debt retirement until such debt is retired”.
So as soon as he concedes the money stops - if he continues the pretence he can keep the cash flowing in.

If you are following Chiefgate...
1. 2 tory sources confirm Cain was offered job by PM at weekend after talking about it for few weeks
2. PM's fiance, Carrie Symonds, however, said to be deeply unhappy about the plan
3. Not now clear what outcome will be

Well judging by his comments at PMQs today, Johnson seems pretty sure Trump is on his way out at least.

I've seen the convincing argument about fundraising too.

What are the changes at the Pentagon about then? Serious question.

I suppose the real question is, what are Republican supporters seeing on Facebook. :?:

The real issue for the Democrats in the US and Starmer here is, what are you going to do to make sure we don't end up in the same place again?

There may be nothing the Dems can do, because of the nature of the US constitution, but that certainly doesn't apply here.

If the only thing that can stop a majority Con govt being elected on a minority of the vote is giving up on the possibility of a majority Labour govt* then that's what we should do. Any sign that Starmer has ever given this even a moment's thought would be very welcome.

* which is in any case vanishingly unlikely because Scotland

Starmer has previously indicated he is sympathetic to electoral reform, and I do wonder if 2024 will see some sort of Labour manifesto pledge on it.

From someone who actually was one...
Gavin Kelly
@GavinJKelly1
A key role of CoS is to avoid governing gridlock & make daily judgement calls for PM between competing interests: different departmental views; voices within No 10; wings of party; or short v long-term perspectives.

Hard for anyone. Harder still if steeped in a Comms mindset.

Not liking the look of this (from the G):
What Donald Trump is attempting to do has a name: coup d’état,” said Timothy Snyder, a history professor at Yale University specializing in authoritarianism, on Twitter. “Poorly organized though it might seem, it is not bound to fail. It must be made to fail.
