What will we do when Trump has gone? He's so reliable at making the UK look almost sane by comparison.US Supreme Court rejects Texas suit to overturn election. Texas GOP publishes a response suggesting likeminded states get together and secede from the union.

Re: Saturday & Sunday 12-13 December 2020
I was thinking about this earlier this morning (making the third cup of coffee). There's a lot of focus at the moment on the honesty of scientists (see story about death threats to swedish scientist cleared of scientific fraud in the THES last week) - but what about politics. There's too much "that's how it is" attitude to it. Unless politics stops being "how it is" democracy not only doesn't stand a chance, it fundamentally doesn't exist.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:Morning.

I remember the sugar shortage, though how much of it was real and how much was stockpiling we don't know. Some people my age and older kept extra sugar in the cupboard for years afterwards, possibly still do. Rather like toilet rolls currently.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:And this is excellent on food shortages before we joined the EEC

This is the trouble, there only were 2 choices and people flailing about trying to avoid backing one or the other got us to where we are, imo.
We should have learned from the US. If one side supports democracy, the constitution and the rule of law and the other doesn't, it shouldn't be hard.
You might not like the policies of the side supporting democracy but you can be confident of getting another chance down the line.

Well said.
Which was why I was happy to support Corbyn while not being a Corbynista in any sense.

Terrorist Expatriation Act - Amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to include among those voluntary acts for which a U.S. national (by birth or naturalization) will be subject to loss of U.S. nationality: (1) providing material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization as designated by the Secretary of State; (2) engaging in, or purposefully and materially supporting, hostilities against the United States; or (3) engaging in, or purposefully and materially supporting, hostilities against any country or armed force that is directly engaged along with, or that is providing direct operational support to, the United States in hostilities engaged in by the United States.

Rachel Shabi certainly criticised Corbyn on occasion, but to say she didn't support Labour - at last year's GE especially - is a tad harsh I think.gilsey wrote:I don't recall Shabi being supportive of the side that wasn't lying in the GE.

UK's catastrophic rupture with the EU is unconscionable. Johnson god damn ran his dirty GE last year assuring all he'd all "oven ready Brexit deal" ready to go. I'm so angry. A lot of people don't have resources enough to do this thing; we don't.Severe delays as businesses try to get goods into Britain before a potential no-deal Brexit on 1 January

I should've made clearer - I posted this from US legislation pages because some Republican Congress members are violating this law with their calling for an armed break with parts of the US. These members are absolutely wrong; it's a federal crime threatening dissolution of the US.citizenJA wrote:Summary: H.R.5237 — 111th Congress (2009-2010)

Cornwall councillor Tim Dwelly said Boris Johnson promised Cornwall the same investment that it got from the EU, according to the the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).
"He literally put that to the people of Cornwall in advance of the last general election and now he seems to have completely broken his promise," he said.
"Here in Cornwall the people who voted for Brexit and voted for the Conservatives did so because they believed or were told it was about taking back control and a commitment by our government to continue to support Cornwall.
"They will be feeling used."

Police investigate suspected voyeur over fake nude gameshow
Is it cynicism, relief or standards that makes me relieved it's not a story about a man preying on women or an adult on children?
I do understand, and agree, that this is a bad thing, and get why it is a bad thing. On the other hand, 'I was happy to get it all out for everyone to see but if it's just for him then that's not on'.A 28-year-old man reported that he had been approached by a man claiming to be in the entertainment industry. The suspect asked the man to take part in a game show for the chance to win £5,000, the Metropolitan police said. The man was asked to go to a hotel in Newham, east London, to take part in several filmed nude “challenges” as part of the show. The suspect then kept the footage, believed to be for his own gratification, police said.

It's kind of got that feel of young girls being lured into doing topless shots. Anyone who has been lied to in order to get them to pose naked is a victim, I think, even if they would willingly get naked in some circumstances. The cynic in me does wonder, though, if the relative novelty of male victims has led to extra effort in solving the case.adam wrote:Police investigate suspected voyeur over fake nude gameshowI do understand, and agree, that this is a bad thing, and get why it is a bad thing. In France they would pick up the suspect and slap him about a bit, whereas in Scandinavia they would play it by the book, even Iceland which according to BBC4 has an appaling murder rate.
Our police would be too busy covering their own arses.

But he is right the British people voted for the EU to abolish itself in 2016 and for the end of negotiations and never hear the word Brexit ever again in 2019.
The fact that both are impossible says something about British politics and the expectations of the British public.

I'd love to know what EdM thinks of the nonsense Nandy & Ashworth are spouting.
Has Ashworth even heard of the SNP?
Instead of talking bollocks about targeting, how about developing some costed policies that would greatly benefit the country on poverty, the environment, health and social care etc and worry about who you're 'targeting' with them nearer GE time?
That way you might even have some Labour members left to go out and sell them to the 'targets'.

I see the revisionism about 2017 being solely due to the "worst Tory campaign ever" is making a comeback too. Sigh.
In other news, it appears today isn't the absolutely final deadline for a deal with the EU after all. Who knew?

Afternoon.
The Campaign for Common Sense (yes, it's a right winger or two) have come up with some "research" they've done of leftie comedians hogging all the space at the BBC.
I kid you not - this is the full report. It may be me but when I read a "summary" I expect that there is some detail behind it but it seems to have gone missing...
https://campaigncommonsense.com/wp-cont ... PUBLIC.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Weirdly when you get to the suggested alternative comedians (including Lee Hurst!) he seems not to know these two are one and the same...
Andrew Doyle " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Titania McGrath " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But it's got picked up the Mail, Express and Telegraph s job done.
