Morning all.

This might be worth a read on the Brexit deal.

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And I saw some wally yesterday claiming that by agreeing a deal we get "frictionless trade" - dearie me...that's what we're losing by not being in the Customs Union!

What does he think all of these new customs form-fillers* are doing exactly?

* the ones outsourced overseas.

6000 lorries backed up in Kent, and that's just the ones they counted. I wonder what the new normal will be.

I tend to take Richard Murphy with a pinch of salt on political issues but he's usually right on tax issues and this is his take on the EU trade deal (and probably what all of this has been about):

This:

One thing we can expect from a Brexit deal (perhaps even more than with a no-deal on 1 January) is an acceleration of firms leaving the UK market.

After all, the uncertainty will be gone. They will have a clear view of the future for the first time, and some will say: "nope".

Whereas had we failed to reach a deal they would have known we were bound to keep trying for one, with the chaos of no-deal focusing minds.

The only thing worse than not knowing is knowing it's bad. :(

Scotland first in with complaint of being stuffed over, first of many no doubt. From the G liveblog:
Nicola Sturgeon, the Scottish first minister, says the deal will be “disastrous” for Scottish farmers because seed potatoes are excluded from third country listing

There's been lots of talk about fish but none about seed potatoes.

From JP Morgan

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I know it's obvious but the PM would have to claim this deal as a success no matter what was agreed. No PM is going to say "Well, I have a deal but it's a terrible one"

Rumours of a deal now appearing a little premature. It seems we still haven't got the fake "win" on fish that Boris was hoping to use as a fig leaf for a deal that will be bad for everyone except tax dodgers and Russian oligarchs.

Nah, its all noise.

The papers wouldn't have been briefed the way they were last night if there was almost any chance of this not happening.

I agree, but the timing has gone to cock for the perfect Xmas eve deal plucked at the last minute out of a hat. They were looking at the wrong fishing numbers, apparently and have had to start over, hence the boredom inducing long wait which has definitely taken a bit of wind out of Boris' obviously spun sails.
Instead of spending the last news day before Xmas saying how marvellous he is to have got a deal done, we're instead asking what's in it and what's the catch (pun only slightly intended :D ).

More fishy puns here:

Downing Street has issue a statement after the securing of a post-Brexit trade deal with the EU.

Everything that the British public was promised during the 2016 referendum and in the general election last year is delivered by this deal. We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters.

Taking back control of our money?

That's right - I forgot - we were in the Euro weren't we? And we definitely didn't go for a spell of printing money using Quantitative Easing...

Usual nonsense.

From the G:
Johnson says they compromised on fishing in terms of the transition period.

He says there isn’t as much in the deal about financial services as they would have liked
Seems a little offhand for one of our biggest economic sectors. Incidentally the City of London won't he alone in being affected by this. I believe Edinburgh has quite a large financial services presence as well.

As expected.

I didn't catch any of Boris's press conference but have read he was lacking energy and generally looked a shell of the man he once was. "Be careful what you wish for.." springs to mind.

Has to be said that Tom Harwood corners the market in expecting others not to notice what he said before.
